What is the origin of the colorful festival of Holi in India?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Holi, the colourful festival, is celebrated with much ardour across India, especially the northern cities. It falls either in the month of February or March every year and marks the festival of Harvest.

There are some interesting tales about the origin of Holi, the most famous one is associated with Hiranyakashyap, the egoistic king. He had a son who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father, the king. Holika, his demon sister, was also against this fact, she was granted immunity from fire. So, she coaxed her nephew to sit in the fire with her. What she wasn’t aware of is the boon only worked when she entered the fire alone. As a result, Holika was burnt to death and Prahlad was saved because of his unbroken chant to Lord Vishnu. The moral behind this story is that good triumphs evil. So, now you know the origin of the colourful Holi festival in India, go out and enjoy the celebrations to the hilt.
