Food is a major part of everyday life and it's fun to try the local food of the places we visit, isn't it so? This beautiful hill station called Palampur, with lush mountains and miles and miles of tea plantations, has surprisingly yummy palette of food items which are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

The cuisine of Himachal Pradesh is an amalgamation of Tibetan and Punjabi Cuisines which is truly an unlikely fusion. The cuisine in Palampur is on the same lines and the combining of two very differing styles has developed through the growth of the Tibetan and Punjabi subcultures found within this hill station. Non-vegetarian food, with a generous dose of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and red chillies, is very much the norm.

The basic ingredients for the lip smacking dishes include chicken, mutton, lentil, rice and cereal with the domination of red meat and wheat bread called Roti. The food is cooked in mustard oil or clarified butter with aromatic spices used in abundance as the base of many dishes. Along with the Indian fare, you can also gorge on hot steaming Momo and noodles which are readily available and popular with travellers. Just stop by at one of the local restaurants in Palampur and try these authentic cuisines.

Meat-eaters should definitely try the non-vegetarian delicacies like Trout, Grilled Fish and Chicken Anardana. For the vegetarians there is Guchhi Mattar, Sepu Vadi, Kaddu ka Khatta, Bhatura and Chana Madra. And those with a sweet tooth, do try the Mittha or Sweet Rice prepared during festivals and Nasasta a Sweetmeat of the Kangra region. The festivals call for special food preparations including Dham (made of rice and Moong Dal) and a dish of Rajma cooked in yoghurt which takes a night long preparation, Ankalos (made of Rice flour), Aktori (kind of a cake made of Buckwheat leaves and Wheat flour) and Patande (a type of Pancake dish).
