So,you are all set for an amazing panorama of fun, colours and excitement as you venture to explore the contours of Kodaikanal? Here are a few snippets of what it’s like to be a smart tourist at Kodaikanal-

  • Woollen clothing is a must, even if you go visiting during the peak summer time.

  • Prefer the bicycle as a mode of transport within the town as it is cheap, delightful and easily available.

  • Always remember to take the necessary cautionary tips from the locals before embarking on adventurous activities like trekking, horse-riding,etc. Since the area is a hilly terrain and not a plain,it becomes a little more difficult to cope with.

  • Be overly careful while visiting the Devil’s Kitchen, which is dangerously deep, and unsuspecting travellers, if not accompanied by a guide or a local person, may end up committing fatal mistakes.

  • Avoid visiting the Green Valley View(Suicide Point) before 10am or after 3pm as during these odd hours, the valley normally tends to be covered with mist and therefore the visitor may not be able to fathom the deeps around. Also the monkeys around may not always be the cheering stock. Be careful.

  • Water samples from Kodaikanal Lake have proven to be contaminated with high levels of mercury, along with lichens and mosses. So avoid using the waters as far as possible.

  • While a serene walk by the Kodai Lake try and stay away from the touts and agents that come to offer their services, they might be con men!! There are also fake astrologers that may dodge you into palm reading and fortunetelling, a polite ‘no’ would be enough to avoid them.

Believe it or not, these tips are going to save you a lot of trouble!!
