If the holy land of Haridwar is your next destination, then here are a few tips you must keep in mind before you set rolling-

Before anything else, you should know the general DON'Ts

  • Avoid getting into the river Ganges during the rains or peak winter season as it might be risky for several reasons.
  • Saints and sadhus may be the trademark of Haridwar, but you may not always be lucky to bump into the genuine ones. Avoid offering extravagant formalities or money on their behest.
  • Monkeys, cows, dogs, etc can be a menace too. So watch your steps!
  • While taking a dip in the holy Ganges, do not forget that at present it is one of the most polluted rivers in India. So avoid it for drinking purposes.
  • Do not try to feed the fish in the river with balls of kneaded wheat flour. I don't know about the fish but the dish is not healthy for the river in any way. Remember, you are not the only one taking a dip into the river.
  • Stampedes are a frequent occurrence during festivals, specially Kumbh Mela. You should definitely try to take care of yourself at that time and restrain yourself from getting in the middle of a mob. Avoid taking the bridges on the river Ganges.

and here come the DO's

  • Always trust the authorised agencies or tourist guides. Conmen or frauds may be lurking just around the corner. Beware of them!

  • Haridwar is very rich in its religious heritage. Its people generally are ardent followers of traditions. So avoid non-vegetarian food and alcoholic beverages here. Also try getting in sync with the religious practices followed in the temples, churches, mosques over here.

  • Haggling over the prices of the items that are available at the local markets is a must if you don't want to feel stupid after coming back home.
  • Always, at every step, take care of your belongings and the people around you. It becomes all the more important when you are at the Ghats as the steps there can prove to be fatal without the right amount of precaution.

So grab your traveller's hat, and set out to both explore the world of holy Haridwar as well as gain an insight into your own inner world.
