All set to venture to this tourist magnet of Rajasthan? But wait! Before you leave, we have compiled a list of tips that are sure to make your vacation even smoother and more hassle-free.

  • Clothing and essentials

Wear light and comfy clothes during the afternoons, but make sure to pack some light woollens as well, because the nights can get chilly during the winter months (
October to February). Getting sunburnt or sunstrokes is quite common here, so you should arm yourself with a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and a good amount of sunscreen lotion (SPF 25 or more). Carrying some mosquito repellent would be a good idea as well.

  • Tourism office

The first thing to keep in mind is to do your research from the Internet, travel sites and/or friends and family. Being informed will go a long way in helping you make the right decisions. If however you have any doubts, visit the registered Jodhpur tourism office, which is in the
Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) hotel Ghoomer’s complex and is open from Monday to Saturday. The Jodhpur railway station has an International Tourist Bureau which also provides tourist related information.

  • Reservation

Often the auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and the taxi drivers work on a commission basis with the hotels and restaurants in Jodhpur. Even if you tell them to take you to a particular destination, they will drop you at the hotel, claiming it to be the one you wished to go to. Sometimes they will even have someone standing outside the doors, posing as the manager of the hotel, who will tell you that no rooms are available there. If you haven’t made any previous bookings, make sure to ask for availability of rooms from the hotel reception.

  • Money

Make your payments with cash as far as possible and carry lots of change. Usually the street vendors or local village people would not have change for big notes. While travelling, distribute your money in several places instead of storing them in a single place, so that even if you lose a bundle, you are not completely handicapped. Always be cautious of pickpockets.

  • Travelling

Try and make arrangements with your hotel for a pickup from the airport/railway station. Most hotels offer this service either free of cost or for a little extra charge. We would recommend you to not hail autos or taxis from directly outside the airport or railways stations as many of these drivers work on a commission basis with hotels and would try to lure you to a particular one, feeding you with false information, in order to make a profit.  If you are travelling alone, try not to make the fact obvious. While asking for directions, make it a point to ask at least 3 different people for confirmation. You should haggle the prices before you get on a cycle rickshaw or an auto rickshaw.

  • Miscellaneous

Keep your travel documents and identification papers in a safe place and always carry the photostat copies and your passport sized photograph with you. If you are not sure about the hygienic standards maintained by a restaurant or a street food vendor, avoid eating raw, uncooked food like salads. Also, drink mineral water and use hand sanitizers. This will help you in escaping a bout of traveller’s diarrhoea. Medicines are comparatively cheaper in Jodhpur and there are a lot of all-night pharmacies easily available. Just make sure to carry your prescriptions, just in case you need to get them filled. Tourism is a money-making business not only in Jodhpur but also in most parts of India. Use your judgement and common sense to stay away from tourist traps.

We hope the above tips help you in making more informed choices, prevent you from falling prey to any unscrupulous person and overall make you more prepared for your journey to this extraordinary city.
