So, you are all set to explore the contours of Dalhousie? And it seems too long to wait? Here are a few snippets of what it's like to be a smart tourist at Dalhousie-

  • Weather and Nature

  • Dalhousie is a hilly region. Do not forget to carry woollens for the vacation as it gets cold even during summers. During winters, temperature may even drop to below freezing point sometimes. So, heavy woolens are required.
The summer season is clearly a favourite amongst tourists, owing to its favourable weather conditions.
  • Do carry an umbrella if it's cloudy. Mild showers of rain are quite frequent, especially in monsoons.
  • If you can manage, you should bring a telescope or binoculars here as the night sky is very beautiful and clear to be explored.

  • Journey

  • Taxis are a preferred mode of travel to and within Dalhousie. However, haggling over the fares will certainly prove profitable.
You can also hire a taxi for roaming in and around the city. The taxi operators will charge you between INR 5000 and INR 8000 for 3 nights and 4 days.
  • Do check out the fascinating Tonga rides across the city, which are very popular among tourists.

  • Sightseeing

  • The Satdhara springs are said to have therapeutic features as they contain mica. So, do give them a try if you are suffering from any ailment. The legendary Subhash Chandra Bose too came here to regain his failing health and meditate here. The site is a good experience even for casual visitors.
  • If you are visiting Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary, do remember that private vehicles are not allowed inside the premises. If you are still keen on taking your own vehicle inside the sanctuary, then a permission from the Forest Officer in Chamba must be taken in advance.
    Do look for
    'ghoral' and Himalayan black bear.
The months of March, April, May, September, October, November are said to be the best time to come visiting at this place.
  • If you are a devout Hindu, you might want to travel a bit to Chamba and pay a visit to many local temples such as Laxmi Narayan Temple, Chammunda Devi Temple.
Do remember to follow the local customs such as taking off your shoes at the entrance, maintaining a modest posture, etc. The locals are the best guides for all these things.
  • Do not forget to check the very famous Chamba shawls and Kullu shawls from the Himachal Handicrafts Emporium.
    Also check out the
    Tibetan carpets at Tibetan Market.
You should be wary of duplicate stuff and do not go by hawkers selling cheap stuff.
  • Last of all, you are strongly advised to consult the locals regarding several small, local sites of tourist interests. People here are generally friendly and will guide you about a lot of things.

  • Stay/ Eat

  • For those looking for unconventional, exciting options for a stay, the Youth Hostel will be a very suitable option. Plus, it is extremely pocket-friendly. However, like most hotels in Dalhousie, you must make a booking in advance.
So, to avoid last minute troubles, try confirming a place for yourself in one of the various accommodations available before you set foot in Dalhousie.
  • If you are a non-vegetarian, you cannot afford to give miss to Saag Chicken and Chilly Chicken Sizzlers at Kwality Restaurant located at Gandhi Chowk in the city.
  • Do check out Amritsari Dhaba and Sher-e-Punjab Dhaba for authentic North Indian food.
  • For genuine and delicious Tibetan food, visit the small but beautiful Snow Lion Restaurant.

  • General

  • Lastly, do not forget to keep some emergency numbers handy. Here are some-
The local Taxi Union: +91-1899- 242739
    Police Station : +91-1899-242126
    Civil Hospital: : +91-1899-242125

We are sure that if you keep these petty considerations in mind, Dalhousie will give you one of the best vacations of your life. So, go ahead and let your hair down!
