From haute couture boutiques to back alley bargaining, shopping in Pondicherry can get very exciting, with something to satiate every pro-shopper's appetite. Not only are there a large variety of shops and marketplaces to explore, but most carry their own unique flavor.
If you are looking for traditional and contemporary Indian art and craft then Auroshri, Currimbhoys, Play Clan, Kumaran Cane craft and Habitart are the shops where you need to head. They carry a unique collection of art and craft made in sandalwood, marble, metal, glass and textile. You will also find a beautiful and incredible collection of silver jewellery, miniature paintings, fancy chess sets and figurines. If your visit takes over the weekend, then do not forget to visit Serenity Beach Bazaar, organized only on Saturday and Sunday. It is primarily a handicraft market and you will find here a range of handicrafts from all over Pondicherry and Auroville.
When you visit White Town, you can sense the palpable change in flavor and feel. The former French headquarters of Pondicherry, it has still managed to, after all these years, retain much of its French flavor. Here Cane Lab design and La Maison Rose are two of the many boutiques run by French nationals. Cane Lab Design offers furniture inspired by the 1950's, the designs of which reconcilliates rattan or cane with more contemporary designs. It may be a bit out of your budget being custom design based, but you may just get ideas for your own home furniture. In addition to these, you could visit Casablanca, Living Art Lifestyles and Yaka Home design.

The varied flavours of Pondicherry are best captured when you go for handicraft and souvenir shopping. It will take you through pockets and shops that carry one-of-kind-treasures and when you come back, the satisfaction would be one of having discovered a treasure trove of Indian and French art and craft.
