Are you a nature enthusiast, who loves exploring the myriad breeds of animals and plants? If that is so, there are some very exciting sites awaiting you in Ooty. Here are the names.


  • Mukerti National Park and Lake
    Located on the southern slopes of the Nilgiris and extending as far as to the eastern side, this abode is meant for wildlife cultivation. The park allows free breeding among the various species of animals. The authorities undertake ample of steps to protect and conserve threatened or endangered animals.
    The adjoining Mukerti Lake serves as an eco-friendly shelter for animals like ducks and birds. Moreover, boating is a most pleasurable experience here, giving you breathtaking sights.
    Some very prominent or famous species you should look for are- barking deer, Nilgiri marten, jungle cat, otter, jackals; laughing and whistling thrushes, woodcock, wild pigeon.Government does not allow casual tourism or private tour operators here. So that has to be kept in mind. However, the Forest Department does offer training in trekking activities in order to familiarise the public with the conservation efforts of the department.   • Sanctuary Avalanche
    This wildlife sanctuary was constructed with the noble intention of preserving wildlife, and still makes endeavours in that direction. It is located in the Nilgiri Hills, about 65 km away from the Nilgiris and provides an eco-friendly environment to several threatened species of fauna and flora.
    The sanctuary does offer adventurous activities like wildlife safari and nature walk to visitors.
    The best time to visit is between February to May and September to November. The park is open on all days from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm except on Tuesdays. Entry is free for children below the age of 5 years and is INR 15 for adults.
