Located on the western bank of river Yamuna, Agra, the former capital of Hindustan (Old name for Republic of India) is the city on the banks of river Yamuna in the northern state of state Uttar Pradesh. It is 363 kilometres (226 mi) west of state capital, Lucknow and 200 kilometres (124 mi) south of the national capital New Delhi. The cities of Fatehpur Sikri, Ferozabad and Bharatpur are also located close to Agra. It will approximately take you about 5 hours to reach Agra from Lucknow and about 3 hours to reach there from New Delhi.

Also, it is important to note here that Yamuna Expressway (formely known as Taj Expressway), a 6-lane, 165 km long access-controlled expressway, connecting Delhi-Noida-Greater Noida with Agra is to be opened in August 2012. This will drastically reduced the time taken to reach Agra from Delhi.

With Agra Cantonment Railway Station to the south-west, the main market of Kinari Bazaar and Agra Fort in the north-east, Taj Mahal is situated at a short distance from the fortified area. Taj Ganj, an area inhabited by artisans and craftsmen in earlier days in located south to the monument.

The modern side of the town houses Sadar Bazaar, the Government of India Tourist Office, various handicraft shops, restaurants and the GPO. The Agra airport is 7 kms from the main city.

Agra has gradully carved a niche for itself as an important tourist destination. Agra is home to one of the seven wonders of the world, the magnificent Taj Mahal, and a multitude of historial forts and tombs.
