Set near the beautiful Sagar Talao, MP Tourism’s Malwa Resort (Tel: +91-7292-263235; Tariff: INR 1,390-2,590) has a hospitable staff and offers freshly cooked food. Book in advance. Hotel Rupmati (Tel: +91-7292-263270; Tariff: INR 900- 1,700) has lovely views of the Kakra Khoh. It’s the only hotel that has a generator in a town plagued by power cuts. The third option, the Malwa Retreat (Tel: +91-7292-263221; Tariff: INR 900- 2,100), is also run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

For a heritage experience, there is the Jhira Bagh Palace Hotel (Mob: +91-98260-33801; Tariff: INR 5,000) on Mandu Road. They have a museum. There aren't too many eating options in Mandu, so stick to the hotels in Mandu where you are staying. MP Tourism’s Tourist Cottages and Hotel Rupmati have restaurants that serve both veg and non-veg dishes.

The Ahilya Palace (Delhi Tel: +91-11- 51551575/ 055; Tariff: INR 3,500-10,500), which has 14 rooms on offer, is run by the Ahilyabai Holkar Trust. At a good location rather close to the river, Narmada Retreat (Tel: +91-7283-273455; Tariff: INR 1,190-2,290) has 6 rooms and a restaurant.
