Where to Stay during the Amarnath Yatra

Tents (INR 150-300 per night per person), housing 10-12 people, are available along the way at the night halts. Quilts, pillows, mattresses and kerosene oil lanterns are provided. Hot water is provided for an additional charge.

There are a handful of makeshift toilets but most yatris manage in the open. Huts (8-bedded/ INR 4,000-8,000) are also available at Baltal, Manigaon, Panjtarni and Holy Cave. There is a lack of cleanliness.

Where to Eat during the Amarnath Yatra

Langars dot the entire trek; they provide food (paranthas, milk, biscuits, rotis, dal, rice, sweets, dosa, tea, bread...), basic medication, and some free accommodation and sanitation facilities.

Half a dozen of these langars are located at each of the major halts on the route.

Other Logistics

When to go for Amarnath Yatra:
July to August. The dates of the yatra vary as per the lunar cycle. The yatra is open for two months and concludes on Raksha Bandhan day (Shravan Purnima). Rain or snow can occur anytime during the yatra. There is a registration procedure (1 month ahead) for the yatra, which is not mandatory but recommended. See the SASB website for details.

Reaching the Amarnath Cave: The Amarnath Cave is reached either after a trek from Chandanwari (32 km trek/2-4 days) or one from Baltal (15 km trek/1-2 days).
