Tanjore or Thanjavur is the cradle of art and culture. There is skill and eye for detail in its art forms – its paintings and architecture. And, there is talent in its performing arts – its dances and music. Well, as much as you wish, you can't take back home everything from Tanjore but a souvenir is definitely worth a buy.

  • Thanjavur Thalai Attu Bommai

Popularly known as the dancing dollof Tanjore it is a beautiful memory to take back home with you. It is an incredible example of the gifted craftsmanof Tanjore. Locally made, these are colourful and have a mobile head that moves just the way a real Bharatanatyam dancer would move his/her head. It makes for a pretty showpiece or a present that the little cousins at home would love you for.

  • Thanjavur Paintings

These lovely paintings of celestial episodes captured in bright and flashy colours are a unique souvenir option from Tanjore. A lot of effort goes into making these paintings. First, the artist makes a draft on a cloth base, then comes chalk powder is applied to the base and once the drawing is complete, the precious stone come on. High quality glitter gold is used in the paintings! Usually portraying religious themes, these will be an asset for any household. If you do get one of these, remember to pack the painting properly with layers of paper, so that it doesn't get damaged while travelling.
