Which are some of the strangest foods you have come across on your travels in India?

Chicken Basket in Dzukou (Naga kitchen in Hauz Khas Delhi)

I happened to order this chicken basket which had some 3-4 pieces of chicken and a  bag full of red chillies as its topping. It was the most tongue-scalding, stomach-scorching dish ever.

Noodles with pork balls and shrimp dimsums (at bBar, Delhi)-

My love for Dimsums and my love for Shrimp saw a new high when I had Shrimp Dimsums in chicken soup....

Ever heard of 'Eri Polu'? It is an Assamese dish that is prepared from the Pupa of silkworms. The dish has a rich texture and is prepared by processing the Pupa of the Eri Silkworms that are locally and exclusively found in the region. After the coocoon of the silk worm has been spun, to make the Eri fabric which is specially used to weave shawls and warm clothes, the worms are used to make a delicacy that everyone in the family would sit and enjoy.

Eri Polu is primarily cooked with 'khorisa' (bamboo shoot) and ghost chillies, again locally found in Assam. It is indeed quiet a tasty dish with its crunchy exterior and soft, juicy interior. Try it someday if you happen to visit Assam.

While holiday in fagu , I had a dish called Siddu which I never heard of . It was a local food which was made of rice flour stuffed with some poppy seeds paste......But fortunately this completely new dish was Mouth watering instead a bad experience ...

Fagu is pretty popular in most of Himachal - would be great if you can find and add some pics of it too :)

If you have been in North around Patnitop, Udhampur, and have not tried seeking a local tapri that serves 'Namkeen Chai'. . do that before you miss it !

Its awesome, and is often taken with a local powder based ingredient called Sattu, but is indeed a unique taste that you will not find anywhere else in the world.. . plus - its a very popular local dish which is served only at few selected places..

I loved Puttu in Kerala. Puttu is made with ground rice and coconut - its cylindrical form is a result of the vessel used for cooking it - traditionally, a hollowed out thick green bamboo stick ! It is best had with chickpea curry.

I was in McLeodganj one day..This is the seat of Tibetan Government in Exile and many Tibetan People live here..I went inside a restaurant and ordered special Veg. Momos ...20 minutes later, I got two big pieces of Momo. I never saw that size of momos before..and they were very bad in taste..my worst experience with momos..Later, I found many restaurants with really tasty momos during 20 days stay in that area.

I have also had the Puttu in Kerala. I was staying at a home stay ( they very famous Saj homestay in fact and they made Puttu for me to taste) Quite delicious with the chole at the side!

I was traveling with a South Indian group once. A person took the Roti, Halwa n banana from the meal and made a frankie out of it. Halwa spread on Roti n then banana in middle n rolled. Eww I don't how it must have tasted ... but apparently it is a common local way of eating Halwa n Roti.

Being a vegetarian and Jain on top of that I hardly have foody adventures! Usually finding food without onion garlic is the struggle. :)

Among the culinary delights unique to the Millenium City, Cuttack, none compare the famous Dahi Bara and Aludum, a spicy concoction of three basic dishes i.e., dahibara – vadas soaked in skim yoghurt, ghuguni – curried chickpeas and aludum – whole size potatoes immersed in fiery curry. Other popular fast foods includes Gupchup (Paani Puri), Piaji, Aluchop (Bonda), Singada (Samosa),  Chakuli (Plain Dosa). Here Idlis and Baras are served with a spicy curry unlike Sambhar in South India. Thunka Puri is a unique food of Cuttack available only during the famous Bali Yatra.

I can't remember the name of the dish but it was a sweet dish made of eggs. I had this in Madras and I utterly disliked it.

This was when we were coming back from a 2 day trekking adventure. We were extremely tired on our way back and badly wanted some great food and we found out a Dosa place between Udipi and Mangalore. As I scrolled through the menu, the dosa varieties kept on increasing and I heard the names I never heard of , from Paneer Dosa to Jeera Dosa, Masala dosa to Tomato dosa and then I found Mushroom Dosa. I said I am going to try it and this probably was the weirdest choices of all in the menu considering the look on my friends face. But though strange my choice was excellent, I loved that flavor
