Diving in India is now one of the most popular adventure sports and the most popular diving destinations in the country are in Goa, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands. Professional association of Diving instructors (PADI) offers degrees ranging from beginner level to dive-master and even Diving instructor. Most diving package providers are affiliated with the PADI and offer courses to the tourists. More details about the places and packages on offer are:

While diving is nowadays a very popular tourist activity in Goa, professional divers and most diving enthusiasts do not prefer Goa because of limited underwater visibility. The Mandovi and Zuari rivers deposit all their silt laden waters in the sea which affects the visibility but on a good day when the visibility is about 10 meters you will be able to see the amazing sea life.

Visit the Grand Islands off the Mormugao Harbour which have many good diving sites like the curiously named Umma Gumma reef, the Sail Rock, the lobster avenue, the Shelter cove, the Jettey , Suzy's wreck and the pirate of the Caribbean inspired Davy jones Locker.

The basic courses offered are Introductory course which are for about half a day and cost approximately INR 4000. More advanced courses like the Padi Scuba Diving course is for 2 days and costs INR 14,000. The advanced course approved by PADI for 4 days would cost INR 20,000. The Rescue Diver Course is for 3 Days and the charges are INR 18,000.

Lakshadweep Islands

Lakshadweep Islands with the beautiful coral atolls in the crystal clear blue lagoons have been attracting many divers. They have even been been touted as the Maldives of the Arabian Sea.

Only three, Bangaram, Kadmat and Kavaratti Island, of this group of 36 coral islands is open to tourists and can be reached from Cochin or by plane to Agatti group of islands. If you are lucky you will be able to see the rare Manta Rays during the months between October to december.

Most divers concentrate on the Bangaram Island because of the wreck of the British Princess Royal ship which sunk in a battle with the pirates around this area. While you can look at the black corals till the oxygen lasts in your tanks, picking them up is a punishable crime. The best time to visit is from November to March.

Discover Scuba courses have a duration of about two hours with about 25 min of underwater diving and going upto 6 m and is priced at about INR 1700. Courses like guided snorkeling off the beach costs INR 500 for an hour and about INR 1000 when conducted at the reef. The Introductory Dive Course would cost you about INR 4500 for a day and the maximum depth reached is about 12 m.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are surrounded by calm waters of the bay of Bengal for most part of the year except the monsoons. The islands are well known for their astounding biodiversity. While Havelock Island is the main diving location, Cinque Islands are one of the best diving destinations because of the unique Black corals and sharks which inhabit the surrounding water bodies.

The Rutland Island is an attraction for the amateurs and their training as they have shallow waters. Few tourists operators also offer packages to Snake Island which are famous for its gorgeous underwater rock formations.
