The city of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh is a very well-known Hindu pilgrimage. In fact, there are numerous religious places to visit in and around Tirupati. Nestled at the foothills of the Eastern Ghats, the city is around 550 kilometres from Hyderabad, 250 kilometres, 65 kilometres from Chittoor, and 150 kilometres from Chennai.

Holy places to visit in Tirupati

Here are some of the most popular landmarks of Tirupati.

Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple - Situated near the Tirupati Railway Station, this temple was founded by Sri Ramanuja in 1130 A.D. It is dedicated to Sri Govindarajaswamy.

Sri Kodan Ramaswamy Temple - Located hardly a kilometre away from the Tirupati Railway Station, this one is dedicated to Sri Rama. It was supposedly built in 1480 A.D.

Srinivasa Mangapuram - The temple is dedicated to Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy. Story goes that Venkateswara Swamy stayed her for nearly six months before walking to Tirumala.

Some of the other religious places to visit in Tirupati are Alamelu Mangamma Shrine, Padmavati Temple, and ISKCON Lord Krishna Temple.

Popular places to visit near Tirupati

Tirupati is surrounded by dozens of highly revered and largely visited temples. Here are some of them.

Tirumala Venkateswara Temple - Also known as the ‘Temple of Seven Hills’, the temple is perched atop the seventh peak of the Tirumala Hill. Along with Kerala’s Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, it is amongst the world’s richest as well as the most visited visited place of worship. It goes without saying that this temple is the top priority when it comes to selecting places to visit near Tirupati.

Kapila Theertham - It is the only temple dedicated to Lord Shiva across the 50 mile radius of the holy temple cities of Tirupati and Tirumala. It is situated at the opening of a mountain cave facing the base of the Tirumala hills. There is a spectacular waterfall nearby.

Parasurameswara Temple - This temple is located in the small village of Gudimallam, situated about 20 km from Tirupati. The Linga here is the earliest known Linga to be discovered and is tentatively dated back to the 1st or 2nd century B.C.

Hanuman Temple - It is situated in Tirumala at a distance of around 25 km from Tirupati. Legend goes that Anjana, Hanuman's mother Anjana did penance here.

Other well-known temples near Tirupati include Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Appalayagunta, Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple in Karvetinagaram, Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Narayanavanam, and Avanakshamma Temple. Besides temples, a couple of other interesting places to visit around Tirupati are Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park and Regional Science Center.
