Every city has its own unique flavour and a certain set of experiences which are particular to itself. While in a city as culturally vibrant as Kolkata such a list is impossible to collate, here are a handful of things you absolutely have to do when in Kolkata:

  • Prayers at Kalighat

One of the major points of pilgrimage for devotees of Maa Kali and Lord Shiva, Kalighat is also one of the oldest areas in Kolkata. Be enchanted by the vigour of the aartis or the devotion of the sages which seem like a fixture to the place.
A word of caution though, you might find priests and touts here tailing you and asking (almost forcing, at times) you to buy pooja items or make donations. It is best to steer clear of these people as dealing with them tends to get rude and dirty. Also, this place can be crowded at times of Pooja, so if you are with your family and want to enjoy the
aarti, make sure you keep your kids close.

  • Dinghy ride on Hooghly

Spend an evening at the ghat of River Hooghly watching the calm waves caress the lands and return shyly. Observe the priests follow their routine, buy tea from the walkers who move around and nibble roasted peanuts as the sun goes down. If you get the opportunity, don a life saver jacket and hop onto one of the Dinghies for a soothing ride to the middle of the river. Enjoy spellbinding views of sunset or the endless hum drum of the Howrah Bridge and take back mental images of Kolkata with you which no one can ever steal.

  • Tonga ride at Maidan

Love the rhythmic cling clang of Tonga bells and the jolly bumping of the horse cart? Climb up on a tonga at Maidan and watch the city of Kolkata flash by you as the driver takes you through some of the most iconic places around the city. Ride from Victoria Memorial to Chowringhee lane and I promise you, this ride will be one of your fondest memories in the City of Joy.

  • Street Food Sojourn

If your vision of Kolkata is incomplete without lip smacking street food stalls and vendors, know that I belong to your team! A city that adores its Jhalmuri and Puchka is bound to have an enviable street food culture and Kolkata abides by the same. The street food stalls in Kolkata are a humongous number, and are more known by the faces of their chefs than by names or hoardings. Whether its a temple or a park or a commercial area, streets in Kolkata are lined with food hawkers selling out tangy, spicy, sweet and sour treats which deserve a tasting. The best place to try street food in Kolkata however is Dacre Street, a place you just can’t afford to miss when visiting the city.
