Which are the famous art galleries and museums in Jaisalmer?

How about taking a walk back in time to the glorious past of Rajasthan? Just step into one of the museums or art galleries of Jaisalmer and steal a sneak peak into one of the most regal histories and vibrant cultures of India. Head to one of the following addresses for a mesmerising time:

  • Desert Cultural Museum

    A landmark place in the city of Jaisalmer, any trip is incomplete without a walk down the corridor of the Desert Cultural Museum. From exhibits displaying local musical instruments, ancient coins and currency, traditional jewellery of the womenfolk and hunting gear of men to the historical displays of rulers and kings and the artillery and armour of the armies of bygone times, the museum displays it all. There is also a small bookshop located here where you can lay your hands on an interesting read about the city. The place also holds an entertaining puppet show every evening at 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm which is a delight to watch for kids and adults alike. After the show, the puppet group also puts on some  puppets for sale which you can pick up as gifts or memorabilia.

    Do remember to buy tickets to the puppet show in the morning if you are travelling during the on season, as the show runs to a packed house during these times.

    Timings: 10am to 5pm, Friday closed

  • Jaisalmer Folklore Museum

    Located a short walk from the Desert Culture Centre, Jaisalmer Folklore Museum is a haven of Rajasthan’s rich heritage. Displaying artefacts that span centuries for their age, the myriad colours and flavours of the place are such that you will instantly fall in love with the place. Take a look at the dated paintings, elaborate camel jewellery and other decorative gear, pictures of erstwhile rulers and miniature temples and delve deeper into understanding the vibrant cultural fabric of this city. You can also pick up picture postcards from here, to take back a part of the Golden City with you.

    Timings: 8am to 6 pm

  • Government Museum

    Located by the western bounds of the Jaisalmer Fort, the Government Museum houses wooden and marine fossils of the wildlife of the surrounding regions. A handful of the displays here are as old as a hundred and fifty million years and are worth observing. The place is enriched with a number of placards in various languages dotting the exhibits, which provide all the facts about its age and origin. You can also observe 12th century sculptures from Lodurva and Kiradu when here. The museum is a small place and will take about half an hour to cover.

  • Silk Route Art Gallery

    An art gallery you will spot on your way up to the Jaisalmer Fort and Temples, Silk Route Art Gallery displays quilt and carpet artwork which are for sale. The gallery keepers here are quite helpful and will give you interesting information on the make and the kinds of artwork of the place. A good conversation here often leads to invaluable insights on the culture of the place and proves to be a learning experience. Make sure you bargain before you take home a silken, sparkling bedspread.
