How about a date with the canvas and oils of a city which is famous for its artists, poets, story writers and filmmakers? If the idea appeals to you, make your way to one of the following addresses in Kolkata for a rendezvous with aesthetic beauty!

  • Academy of Fine Arts

    One of the largest museums in India and spanning the spectrum of paintings, textiles, carpets and manuscripts, the Academy of Fine Arts is one place which is revered by art lovers. Showcasing the work of the likes of  Jamini Roy and Gajendra Nath Tagore, the place also organises regular symposiums for meetings and discussions pertaining to art. It takes about two hours time to tour the whole museum, and once done with checking the amazing art collection, you can enjoy refreshments at the canteen or at the small garden restaurant within the complex!

    Timings: 10 am-5 pm, best to go around noon time or post lunch.
    Entry Fee: Nil, photography is strictly prohibited.

  • Ashutosh Museum of Indian Art

    Established with the purpose of preserving and studying antique arts of the country, the Ashutosh Museum of Indian Art is the place for art collectors. The collection here is focussed on East India specifically and the place houses some of the most remarkable pieces of  art you would have seen. Some of the unique Bengali paintings you can spot here are Katha Shilpo and Patachitra Paintings. The museum is also actively involved in archaeological excavations and cultural studies, so it is highly likely you will find a new display on every visit to the place!

    Timings: 11 am-5 pm, Monday to Friday, best to go here in afternoons.

  • Birla Academy of Art and Culture

    Established to encourage the growth of art and culture, the Birla Academy is a haven of educational and artistic activity. Not only does the place showcase some marvellous pieces of art, but also plays host to numerous art and culture exhibits all year long. Consider yourself lucky if you drop in when one of those days. If you want to gain and improve your knowledge on the academics of art, this is the place to be as regular educational programmes about the dynamics of art are organised here! This museum will take up about an hour to see in totality.
