The experience of an element of nature or history can transform your life, even if a little bit. While you’re lounging around on a beach at Koh Samui and a sudden urge to explore some nerdy facts about the place strikes you, take heart. There are two museums in Koh Samui that try to capture different elements of natural and social history. Take a journey into the past at the following museums in Koh Samui:

  • Shell Museum

A small museum which is more like a gallery, this one will take you into the mysteries of the marine world. The owner, William Thomas, is a keen enthusiast and if he’s around, he’ll take you on a personal tour of the museum and explain the origins and characteristics of various shells and sea-creatures, sharing his own personal experiences and knowledge. What’s more, you can even learn the best way to cook the exotic seafood available in Koh Samui!

  • Private Museum

Don’t be misled by the name of the museum for this one is very much open to the public. A generic name like Private Museum won’t tell you much about the vast variety of hidden treasures and historic artefacts that the museum houses. This one plays host to remains from different periods of history, including the Iron Age, the Middle Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the New Stone Age, especially those found through excavations in and around Koh Samui. The owner of the museum,  M.L. Arachawa Worawan, belongs to the family if King Rama IV, the famous ruler of Thailand, adding his own bit of history to the overall enchanting aura of the museum. Located in a 300-year old, wooden building that is built in traditional style, this one is a sure delight for all history buffs.
