Which are the famous museums in Colombo?

Are you a history buff? Are you not able to breathe through your trip if you do not know enough about the history of the place that you are exploring? If that is the case with you then you are going to love the museums that the beautiful metropolitan known as Colombo has to offer. The urban lifestyle blends with the rich heritage of the place.   • Colombo National Museum

    A building which has an ancestral colonial building as its house, the National Museum is one of the most remarkable buildings in the city of Colombo. It is kind of a reservoir for the city’s rich heritage and culture wrapped in the indulging history. Colombo national museum is known for its wide range of half a million books that are on display along with more than 4000 archaic palm leaf manuscripts. You thought that was it? No, certainly not. The museum also has rock sculptures from the ancient times with a lot of artefacts made out of brass and royal weapons of Sri Lankan Kings. The finest collection in the museum will charm you with a dozens of demon masks and enthralling paintings from the bygone eras. An attraction in the museum that attracts hundreds of people to the premises is the regalia of the Kandyan Kings which date back to the 17th century. This is quite amazing, isn’t it?

    You can visit the museum with your children only if they are not below 3 years of age. Well, considering the artefacts on display, they won’t understand them either ways, so, it must be alright.

If not that, you can also explore The Natural History Museum which displays the flora and fauna of the place in dioramas. The Museum is closed on Fridays and public holidays but is otherwise open from 9am to 5pm on working days.

Dutch colonial rule in Sri Lanka. Like all the other museums, this museum also is closed on Fridays and all public holidays and remain open from 9am to 5pm on all the other days.
