Want to take a trip to the past this holiday? Head to one of the grand museums in Kolkata and travel as far as the times of the Raj and beyond! A city as rich in history as Kolkata has to have a number of museums dotting the cityscape and Kolkata delivers splendidly on this performance. Some of the famous museums here are:

  • Indian Museum

    Travel back into time, witnessing the beautiful displays that dot the galleries and hallways when here. The six sections devoted to art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology and industry here make this the largest museum in India and one of the largest museums in the world. These sections have interactive computer screens as well which add the fun factor to the learning one can do here.

    However, the washroom facilities that are available here are not in the best of shape, so you might want to consider freshening up before hand!

  • Mother House

    The erstwhile residence of one of the most iconic women of India, Mother Theresa, Mother House figures in the must visit place list of Kolkata. The simplicity of this place is so heartwarming in its own quiet way that makes its way straight to your soul. Spend some time interacting with the sisters of Missionaries of Charity, or see them work tirelessly for the upliftment of the ill and unhappy. Take a look at Mother Theresa’s belongings at the small museum here and don’t forget to pay your respects at the tomb of our Angel of Mercy.

  • Victoria Memorial

    An attempt of the British to create a replica of Taj Mahal in the honour of the Queen, the Victoria Memorial is an imposing monument of glittering white marble in an oasis of green. Recognized as the symbol of Kolkata, this monument houses a museum displaying British memorabilia and knick knacks from the time of the Raj. Enjoy a momentous sunrise at  the sprawling gardens here or witness a romantic sunset with a loved one or simply come here with your family to enjoy a Light and Sound Show in the evenings! Don’t forget to take your camera along for awesome pictures.

  • Birla Planetarium

    A planetarium with one of the largest domes in the world deserves your visit this holiday, doesn’t it? Come to the Birla Planetarium to understand the facts and functioning of our universe in an interactive and fun way! Enjoyable for both adults and children, the place successfully drives home points about our solar system, galaxy, stars and other heavenly bodies by means of twinkling lights, colourful models and painting displays. Daily programmes are organised here in  a variety of languages, from Gujarati, Oriya and Tamil to Hindi, English and Bengali. Astronomers love this place thanks to the stargazing they can do here by means of the Celestron C-14 Telescope.
