When you visit City Palace, the only place where you can get a glimpse of the opulence of the Rajput and Mughal king is the collection housed inside the Government museum that is located within the Palace. It was established in 1940 by Maharaja Tej Singh Prabhakar Bahadur, last ruling Maharaja of Alwar, who donated much of the royal family’s privately owned collection over the generations. Divided into 3 sections, the museum includes 234 sculptures, 11 inscriptions, 9792 coins, 2270 arms and weapons and 1809 instruments. There’s also a very extensive manuscript collection,  including an illustrated Mahabharata on a 200 foot long scroll as well as illustrated manuscripts of Gulistan, Shahnama. You will get to see the historic swords wielded by Sultan Muhammad Ghori, Emperor Akbar and Aurangzeb. Those with an eye for art would love the miniature painting collection of the Alwar school (19th century) and the Bundi school (17th century). There is a series of miniature paintings based on the classical Indian music ragas and may just be the only attempt in the world to paint pure musical styles.

The museum remains open from 10 am to 5 pm. The entry fees is INR 5 for Indians and INR 10 for foreign nationals.
