The pious side of you will never take a backseat in Nainital, with religious sites always close at hand. Some of the popular places where you can offer your prayers are:

  • Naina Devi Temple

Situated on the Northern tail of the lake at Mallital, this temple is dedicated to the goddess Naina Devi, who is believed to govern the Naini Lake. It is believed to be one of the 64 Shaktipeeth’s in India, places where parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell while Lord Shiva was carrying her. It is here that her eyes fell, and hence the temple and the goddess is called Naina Devi. The temple was rebuilt after it was destroyed in the 1880 landslide.

  • St. John in the Wilderness

The legend here goes that Daniel Wilson, the Bishop of Calcutta, came to Nainital in 1844 to lay the foundation of this church. He fell ill and was forced to stay in an unfinished house on the edge of the forest, after which he gave the church its name. This church offers an old world charm and a little bit of history, with a brass plaque at its altar which bears the names of the victims of the 1880 landslide. Located at Mallital near the Nanda Devi temple, it stands as evidence to Nainital’s history and culture.

Experience the almighty here, surrounded by his best creation - the absolutely serene natural landscapes - and you’re sure to go back home feeling transformed!
