Though Ajmer falls short on the number of religious spots in its precincts, numbers don’t seem to matter for the pilgrims here! That’s because it houses some of the holiest of places not just in the whole of India but the whole Asian region. Take a quick look at what all the city has for the divinity in you:

  • Dargah Sharif

Also known as Ajmer Sharif, it’s the shrine of Sufi Saint Moinuddin Chisti. The shrine has the grave of the revered saint and sees a continuous pouring of devotees of all religions. It’s believed that the saint was directed to come to India in a dream by Prophet Muhammed. The festival of Urs is celebrated at the dargah every year in May, during which the Jannati Darwaza (main gates) are opened to devotees. Take a bow in the sea of inter religious harmony that’s the order of the day here. You can offer flowers, mainly roses, incense sticks and chadders at the dargah. It’s believed that no wish made at the dargah goes unfulfilled. Join the ranks of the millions of devotees that visit the place and leave for home blessed.

Built in 1865, this marvelous structure is one of the best built Jain temples in the whole of Rajasthan. Also known as the Lal Mandir, it’s dedicated to Lord Adinath and has got some of the most exquisite carvings in gold. Walk around the two parts that it’s divided in to pay respect to the lord in the first one and to walk the corridors of the museum in the other one. The interiors of the museum are all in gold and is decorated with Belgium stain glass and paintings in mineral colour. Steal some moments of solitude and sit in the inner prayer chambers, where silver balls hanging from the roof will surely take your breath away.

Address: Prithiviraj Marg

Chandreshwar Mahadev Mandir and the world famous Brahma Temple in the adjoining Pushkar are the other two draws for the religiously inclined ones. And to think of it, even if you aren’t a religious person, divinity in Ajmer speaks for itself. It rides the air, whirls at the cornerstones, roams the bazaars - it makes for the aura of this place spiritual.
