This luxurious holiday destination gives you a chance to safe up a bit on stay with its set of mid budget hotels. These are cheaper the luxury ones but are comfortable as well. Just like the mid budget hotels, these too are arranged in a line along the backwaters. The only thing absent these would be that they won’t have their in house boat service, which they would arrange for nonetheless.

  • Backwater Ripples

With snug wooden interiors entwined with specs of luxury, Backwater Ripples is a traditional setting amidst the Kumarakom lush. The spacious rooms and the open air bathrooms only add to this enchanting experience. But the restaurant is wins the prize with its
multi cuisine dishes that includes some secret recipes from Northern Malabar too. You can eat your fill, then head to the lawns along the Vembanad Lake for a nice walk and then come back for delicious traditional desserts. The HTM clock on the tower in the lawns can be spotted from the Lake itself. They also arrange for boat rides (night and day), ayurvedic massages, village walks amongst other things.

A stay for two starts at INR 6000 here.

  • Tharavadu

Tharavadu literally translates to traditional family home. The low roofs with red tiles and huge pillars are perhaps all reasons why this place is so aptly named. To begin with the person at the reception is always more than happy to assist you. The and well maintained rooms are a delight when you return after a day out at the backwaters. Each room has a private sitout where you can enjoy your morning coffee amidst the tall green trees and a small stream running along. There are a few rides for little kids too. The place arranges for boat rides which you can board from the jetty but the cultural activities and ayurvedic treatments are on hold now. It serves the local cuisine - karimeen (pearl spot fish), appams, parota etc. and that too at economical prices.

A stay for two would cost about INR 3000 and up.

Most of these hotels are arranged in a line on the either side of the road at Kumarakom. You can check the rooms and pick a hotel for yourself, but only during off season. The prices listed above are subject to change with season and demand. Booking in advance is always a good idea. If you are looking for cheaper deals, stay at Kottayam which is about an hour’s drive from Kumarakom.
