For a rich cultural experience in Rajasthan, just head to Udaipur in the festival time.

  • Shilpgram Fair
Established with the motive of reviving and preserving the traditional arts of Rajasthan, Shilpgram is lovingly dubbed as the Handicrafts Village. Situated 3km to the north of Udaipur, the living ethnographic museum features a traditional bazaar where local jewellery, earthenware, fabrics, camel leather goods and other handicrafts are sold.

The Shilpgram Fair is a 10 day event in November that showcases traditional and folk performances from all over India. Step into these compounds and lose yourself to the energetic colours, lively beats, melodious songs and rhythmic dances. Enjoy local cuisine, watch a silversmith at work, weave for yourself a colourful stole, get up with the performers and shake a leg, witness a snake moving to the snake charmer's tune, take a horse ride on a decked up horse or get amazed seeing a man performing tightrope walking tricks - all this and more happens at the Shilpgram Fair. This 18 day festival is celebrated in Rajasthan in the month of March by the womenfolk: the married ones seek marital bliss and those who are unmarried pray for good husbands. While the first few days see worship, song, dance and lamp lighting, the last day is marked by a procession. Idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati decorated during these days are immersed into a water body after this and this is the time when the Mewar Festival starts. Read on to find out more!
