They were grand, they were royal and the Mughals were everything that a dynasty should be like. If you don't believe it, come visit the forts and palaces of Agra. You are not the only one who has Agra as a milestone for your journey as a tourist. The palaces and forts in the city do not only speak of the grandeur but every red stone of the mughal architecture tells the story of the rich cultural heritage and advanced building techniques of the time.

You can explore many forts and palaces in Agra, but some of them which you cannot afford to miss are:

  • Agra Fort

Often termed as the Red Fort of Agra, Agra Fort is one of the biggest forts ever created in the Mughal History. A well preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site constructed from red sandstone, Agra Fort served the dual purpose as a fort and a defensive structure when it was in use.  Famous for its typical Indo-islamic and Persian architecture, this fort is frequented by visitors from all over the world. The fort offers a clear view of its sister monument, Taj Mahal from one of the courtyards. Agra Fort has beautiful and popular structures within its walls explaining why it is often called as the walled city. The structures include Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Masjid and the very popular Angur Bagh.

Another famous structure within the fort is the Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan spent the last seven years of his life being captive to his son.  The fort is open on all days from dawn to dusk. One can reach the fort by taking a rickshaw from Taj Mahal for around INR 25 to INR 30. Entry to the fort is INR 250 (plus levy of INR 50 if you have not already paid the INR 500 fee for Taj Mahal). There are audio guides which are available at Agra Fort. They can be rented for a cost of INR 100 in English and other foreign languages such as German, French, Spanish, etc.  or for INR 60 for the guides in Indian languages like Hindi and Bengali.

  • Jahangir Mahal

One of the most extravagant and beautiful structures inside the Agra Fort is the Jahangir Mahal. The mahal was exclusively meant for the Rajput wives of Akbar. The palace built in the Indo-islamic style of architecture is a gateway for the most amazing sights inside the walled city of the Agra Fort. The walls of the mahal are laden with magnificent carvings of animal and floral motifs that showcase the inclusion of the Rajasthani style of architecture whereas the grand verandahs facing the riverfront with gold and precious gems adorned is a blend in from the Islamic style of art.

The entry to the Jahangir palace is included in the charges taken for entry to the Agra Fort.

  • Seesh Mahal & Khas Mahal

The two mahals are located opposite to each other and are important displayers of the Mughal’s grand lifestyle. Seesh mahal in the Agra Fort was a dressing room which had glass frescos on the walls set in such a way that standing from a certain point in the room, one could see the reflection in every small piece of the mirror in the palace. The palace overlooks the riverfront that makes it even more magnificent. The Khas Mahal was the private quarters for the king and his queens.

The palace is known for its extravagant marble paintings which are one of their kind. The two palaces are the perfect examples of the very famous and intricate jali and stone work. The details on the walls of both the palaces take you to the era and make you live the royal life of the kings at least for a couple of minutes.

The entry to the palaces is included in the fee for Agra Fort.

Warning: You can be in awe of the forts and palace for all your life!
