Which are the must have experiences on a trip to Bikaner?

A trip to a new place is never complete without getting a feel of the unique experiences it offers. Well, the same holds true for Bikaner, so allow me to take you on a spin and show you which experiences shouldn’t be missed when in the Camel Country:

  • Camel Ride in the Street

A ride to the heart of the Bikaner is never complete without hopping onto a camel back and taking a tour of the place! It is not difficult to spot a camel in Bikaner, they are pulling carts, being walked by their masters or simply soaking up some shade (they already have too much of the sun) by the roadside. Control your urges to climb onto these till you encounter a camel decked in colourful fineries from head to toe - those are the ones meant for the travelling folk!

Though a paid camel ride is one experience a trip to Bikaner is incomplete without, a camel cart ride is something which feels totally out of the world. You might be able to get a feel of this one only if you have a gift of the gab, as it requires being friendly and chatty with the old man who is taking his sacks down the city on a camel cart. Shed the inhibition, go forward and ask “
Bhai-ji” for a ride, and trust me, you won’t regret it one bit!

  • Pay respects at the Karni Mata Temple

More popularly known as the Rat Temple, the Karni Mata Temple is actually a wonder of its own kind. When standing at the threshold of the temple, you will see a number of black rats scurrying around busily, with no care for the people walking by. I am not lying when I say that your first impulse will be to turn around and run for your life when this sight greets you, but you have to stay on! Walk in and for the first few minutes you will feel like a ballet dancer, reluctant to put any part of your foot down other than the toes! A little time goes by and you will probably ease in enough to be able to walk easily and you would have entered the main shrine, where you can see an army of rats up to their daily chores.

    Enjoy the invigorating
Aarti and make a Parikrama of the temple and thats when you will find yourself at the place where prasad is being prepared. Though it may seem a little disturbing, this is the place where you will observe a beautiful coexistence of man and rodent, where he is cooking and stirring and the animal is hopping about freely, as if contributing to the preparation in his own small way. Just in front of this place you will find the huge saucers of milk being shared by a number of rats, one of the sights which is iconic for this temple.

Do plan a visit here one morning for a super cool experience which you can later relate as a story of insurmountable valour!

  • Munch Away!

Oh common! Get rid of your calorie conscious self for once and nibble away all the variety of sweets and snacks that come your way when you are strolling on Station Road in Bikaner. Try the Bikaneri Bhujia, Rajasthani Ghevar and all the other snacks that please your eyes or sense of smell! Don't forget to get some snacks packed for home when at it!

Take a sensory trip through Bikaner where you find something to delight each sense of sound, smell, taste, sight and touch! Trust an old hand on this one, more than anything else, you will look on these experiences as beautiful memories years later!
