Nainital is undoubtedly beautiful and enchanting to its visitors, offering a chance to experience amazing calm and tranquility. But the story doesn’t end here. There are several places around Nainital that you can explore for a complete holiday experience. Here are a few popular places for you to visit:

  • Jim Corbett National Park
India’s first and oldest national park, it is named after the famous Englishman, Jim Corbett, who lived in Nainital for a good part of his life. Legend has it that Jim was an avid hunter, but after seeing his friends massacre water-fowls, he grew an aversion to hunting and swore never to kill an animal without reason. Just 63 kms from Nainital, Jim Corbett national park offers Jeep Safari’s, including ones at night, for a wild, wild experience of nature. Spot some Tigers, King Cobra, Elephants, Neelgai, Sambhar Deer, etc, other than of course, a wide variety of exotic birds. Jim Corbett also has camping facilities which allow you to stay in a tent, or a more comfortable cottage, inside the national park.

  • Mukteshwar
Home to the sacred Mukteshwar Dham temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple town is just 51 kms from Nainital. Take a trek to the temple, which is situated at the highest point in the city and experience an unhindered view of the majestic Himalayas. It would take you around 2 hours to reach this place by a Nainital to Mukteshwar taxi and that is the best mode of transport you can choose for this distance.
  • Bhimtal Lake
The largest lake of the Nainital region, this one takes its name from the Mahabharata legend and the famous Pandava, Bhima. Just 22 kms from Nainital, this lake is the only natural one to have an island at its centre. The old Bhimeshwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, takes its name from the Bhima legend that surrounds this town. You would need to hire a cab for this one.
  • Sattal
Literally translated, Sattal means ‘seven lakes’, which is what exemplifies the character of this lake-town. There are large and small interconnected lakes that offer themselves as the perfect picnic or retreat destination. There are also many interesting stay options in the hotels around Sattal. Surrounded by an old oak forest, the lakes in this region are Nal-Damyanti, Panna (also known as Garude) and the cluster of three lakes of Ram, Sita and Lakshman. At a distance of only 23 kms from Nainital, this can be a perfect holiday within a holiday.
  • Naukuchiatal
This nine-cornered lake (the literal translation of Naukuchiatal) is another jewel in the crown of the Nainital region. Legend has it that if one glimpses all nine corners of the lake in one go, one end up disappearing in a cloud of smoke. Now we wouldn’t want that, would we? Naukuchiatal is situated just 26 kms from Nainital, ideal for you to expand your holiday and explore more.

If you want to explore the area around Nainital even more, you could visit Hanumangarhi (3.5 kms from Tallital), Khurpa Tal (10 kms from Nainital by road) and Pangot (15 kms from Nainital).

There are several cab and tour operators within Nainital who offer packages for 1 or 2 day trips to places around Nainital. It might be a good idea to speak to one of these operators (who are in plenty on the Mall Road) and strike a good bargain. Your hotel staff may also be able to help you with advice and arrangements about these daily excursions, especially to Jim Corbett. The bus stand near Mall Road also gives information on buses that ply to these destinations around Nainital, which could be a cheaper option, though a tad slower than cabs.
