A trip to Uttarkashi is more than enough for the pilgrim in you but if you want to go for the famous pilgrimage centres, you just have to trek up a few metres to these nearby destinations. Or if you are looking for a change from the prayers and the chants, even that is possible, with a few hours travel from Uttarkashi.

  • Gangotri

We had always imagine god to be in some place above us, in the sky or in one of the high mountain tops. Come to Gangotri and you will feel it is not an imagination of some creative person that has been handed over to the world from generation to generation but concrete reality. On a height of 3100 m, more than 80 km from Uttarkashi, lies this important Hindu pilgrimage centre. As you climb more and more up towards Gangotri Temple, dedicated to goddess Ganga, you will feel a certain soothing calmness and no, it not totally the mountain breeze that is weaving magic but the serenity of the place is so spiritual and mysterious that you will believe it to be work of something divine and unexplainable. After a prayer in this temple, you can trek a distance of 19 km to Gaumukh, which is the point of origin of the revered river.

  • Yamunotri

Spirituality is in the air in Uttarkashi. No matter where you are, you will never be far away from the fragrance of incense sticks or the sound of the temple bells. 30 km from Uttarkashi will take you to Yamunotri, one of the destination for the chota chardham yatra ( a Hindu pilgrimage ). Famous as the origin of the river Yamuna and as the seat of the goddess Yamuna, this place is thronged by pilgrims because of the Yamunotri temple and reverberates with their chants and energy. Join them and drown yourself in the frenzy vibe.

  • Rishikesh

This town is on the way to Uttarkashi and you can decide whether to visit it on the way or while coming back. Though a little far away from Uttarkashi at a distance of around 143 km, this place is famous for its adventure sports like rafting, hiking, bungee jumping etc. So, after the quiet praying spree, you can go wacko here. Scream out, be in tune with nature and dive into the waves of adventure.

With everything within the reach of a few days itinerary, your trip will be quite fulfilling and unexpected from a town as small as Uttarkashi. Didn’t they always say not to go by the size? Well, its turning out to be quite true when it comes to Uttarkashi.
