Think of Rajasthan and you picturise puppets, a riot of colours and vibrant dances. Want to catch a few of them on your trip to Udaipur? Make your way to the following places, join in the folk dances or learn to hum a Rajasthani tune or two.

  • Bagore Ki Haveli

    Silent corridors and eerie rooms in the days, the courtyards of Bagore ki Haveli are decked in the traditional fineries of Rajasthan in the evenings. Watch women with stacks of earthen pots dance to local beats or watch the puppets shake and move to the songs like live beings! The best part about this show is that it done in both Hindi and English, making it foreigner friendly. Don't forget to take your mosquito repellent as the lights can attract them and you don't want to become their food.

  • Shilpgram

    Established with the motive of reviving and preserving the traditional arts of Rajasthan, Shilpgram is lovingly dubbed as the Handicrafts Village. Situated 3km to the north of Udaipur, the living ethnographic museum features a traditional bazaar where local jewellery, earthenware, fabrics, camel leather goods and other handicrafts are sold. Not only does this encourage the local artisan by giving him business but also makes for remarkable conversation pieces in your homes. Adults and children both can enroll for art and craft courses here and go home with more than just an experience. A visit here in the evening will prove to be delightful for both you and your kids, as you observe professional dancers dancing on swords and live coal.

  • Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal

    Housing a noteworthy collection of colourful folk art of Rajasthan, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal is going to unfold the myriad cultures of the desert state in front you. It features life size interpretations of folk dances such as Ghoomar, Kalbelia and Bhavai. This complex also has two auditoriums for live performances. While one runs puppet shows all day long, the other holds specialty performances like sword dances and cultural dances of Rajasthan.
