Which are the popular art galleries in Colombo?

How important is the art from any place that you are visiting is? Is it too important for you? Do you always want to capture the essence of the artists who have brushed their ways through the lanes of the city? If the answer to the question is in the form of a serious nod then art galleries in Colombo is going to be your thing. Try any one or all of them. You will be impressed in more than one way.

  • Sapumal Foundation

    This is an interesting one. This was once the home of a famous artist, Harry Pieris which is now converted into a lavish art experience in itself. This tile roofed bungalow offers the art lovers with more than 200 paintings that chronicle the growth of Sri Lankan art during the different phases of history. Whoever comes here can look at the artist’s studio and other materials which have been left undisturbed over the years. There are also special art classes that are available here which can be an experience for many and a revelation of their artistic self for others.

  • National Art Gallery

    Located next to the National Museum, this is a building that houses few of the most prominent exhibits showcasing the art flowing in the veins of the city. It has a wide range of permanent exhibits which are basically portraits and landscapes and there are also theme based temporary exhibits which are put on display time and again. If you want to experience what art in Colombo is all about, then this must be the place for you. Photography in this gallery is not allowed but if you are researching about something and want to click one or two of them, you can have a talk with the authorities and can do that.

  • Casa Serena Art Gallery

    This is a gallery which is more of a purpose built space. And what a fantastic use of the space. The gallery is focussed on displaying the unique blend of traditional and contemporary art coming from local and international artists together. Art, Photography, Sculptures and craft and video installations, you name it and the gallery has it. Casa Serena art gallery is also known for its dynamic nature which is aimed at spanning the maximum number of artists in the city.

  • The Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre

    This is another one which acts as the icing on the cake for the ultimate experience while travelling to Colombo. The Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre is like an art hub that becomes a centre providing a multi-functional experience through art shows, exhibitions and various stage events. Also, if you want to take some of the exhibit home, you can buy some from here. Of course, they are not going to be cheap. You can lay your hands on some of the best antiques and paintings along with other craft items by some of the finest Sri Lankan artists that the city has to offer provided you have the moolah in your pocket.
