If you go to a place for peace, beauty, its culture or everybody's top priority good food, Kathmandu is the place for you. The capital city of the amazing Nepal, Kathmandu offers something for everyone. Some come to Kathmandu for its culture and tradition, others just to imbibe the history of the place.

Kathmandu is going to be a special one on your list of visited places for sure. The amazement starts from the very fact that all the monuments in Kathmandu and its sister cities Lalitpur (Patan) and Bhaktapur have been recognised as one unit under the title "Kathmandu Valley-UNESCO World Heritage Site."

The capital city of Nepal has famous stupas to museums, from palaces to temples, and from famous chowks to ever crowded popular streets. There are innumerable attractions in the city but some of the ‘not to be missed' ones are:

  • Swayambhu

This stupa is one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the country and is visited by tourists, locals and monkeys alike. It is also known for offering one of the best views of the city. Just a 20-30 minute walk away from Thamel, the stupa is also a site to buy some intricate tibetan trinkets. Momos at the restaurant near the stupa are not to be missed. If you do not want to slip in for free on the ramp on the southern side of the stupa, you just have to pay 200 NPR to enter at the front steps. The parking lot at the back entrance significantly decreases the amount of steps that need to be climbed to gain access to the main compound.

  • Boudha Stupa

Another very important site for Tibetan Buddhists is the
Boudha Stupa in Boudha which is considered to be one of the most sacred of all the Buddhist sites. It is frequented by visitors and locals alike and hence is a must see attraction in the city of Kathmandu.

  • Narayanhiti Palace Museum

Once a Royal palace, this building presently serves partly as a museum and partly as the Foreign Ministry. The grandeur of the place can be well experienced by roaming around the halls of the main building of the palace. Tall trees around the building and rich heritage speaking through the walls of the well secured palace are an experience in itself.

The entrance fee for foreigners to gain access to the building is around 500 NPR. Best time to visit is during the sunset because of the beauty that the old building acquires during that time.

  • Durbar Square

The ancient square, that literally means ‘place of palaces', was built in the heart of the capital city of
Nepal, Durbar Square has been a site of interest because of the innumerable palaces and temples built in the square. It houses the current incarnation of the Kasthamandap or "Wooden house" that gives the city its name. The attraction is the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal. The complex has to be cherished especially during very early mornings and evenings as it attains a different charm altogether at these times. Another interesting attraction associated with the complex is the Durbar Square Museum that has on display the glorious Nepalese history.

  • Taleju Temple

There are a large number of Hindus residing in Kathmandu which explains the equally large number of temples that are present in the city. A very famous temple is the Taleju Temple which is regarded as one of the oldest temples in the Durbar square. It is popular for its unique style of architecture that has a three-roofed temple with its pyramid shaped bases. It is a classic example of the Newari architectural style.

  • Pashupatinath

Another revered Hindu temple is Pashupatinath which is a temple devoted to Lord Shiva in the form of Lord of Animals. You can befriend monkeys or can visit the holy caves here. Morning is the best time to visit the temple and the surroundings as it is the most spiritual and serene at this time of the day.

  • Thamel

Thamel is a very popular tourist destination in Kathmandu that has been often termed as a ‘tourist heaven'. It is interestingly a full Wi-fi zone in Nepal and features streets that are lined with small shops selling anything to everything. The shops here have from food to clothes, from cakes and pastries to DVDs, and from handicrafts to mountaineering gear. It also has many travel agents and budget hotels along with some of the best restaurants in the city that boast of good food and better standards of food hygiene than the rest of the city.

Also while on a trip to Kathmandu, one should not miss visiting the Nasal Chowkthat has various old statues, temples and the very famous Rana museum. These attractions are just the chartbusters, Kathmandu has dozens of them ready as a treat for the traveler in you.
