There are times when you feel like eating out in a less formal and cosier atmosphere, lounging about with a coffee in one hand and a book in another. Cafes are the ideal place to go if you are looking for some social mixing, light snacks and some great choices in beverages. The best part has to be the lingering divine aroma of crushed coffee beans and baked cookies in the air. Here are a few cafe listings that you might find worth a visit.

  • Hansa Ceylon Coffee
Great ambience and awesome coffee! If you are picky about coffee or consider yourself a gourmet coffee drinker, Hansa is going to be a very pleasant surprise for you. The varieties of Sri Lankan coffee served here, have a full bodied aroma and a rich taste that is hard to put to words. In other words, the very best cup of coffee that you have ever had (yes, even better than Starbucks). And with the chocolate made from Sri Lankan dark cocoa, you will never get the same exquisite taste and texture of the Cafe Mocha or Mocha Latte at Hansa’s, anywhere else. The coffee beans are selectively handpicked and then undergo a quality screening, before being sent to the grinding machines. Kind of reminds you of the Cadbury Bournville advertisement, doesn’t it? This little gem is tucked away in:

Address: Hansa Ceylon Cafe24 Fife Road
    Sri Lanka

  • Cricket Club Cafe
Unlike any other regular cafe, this one is a themed bar and restaurant. Almost every surface is covered with cricket memorabilia, including bats, balls, hats, gloves and shoes belonging to several famous cricketers like Sir Don Bradman, Shane Warne, Arjuna Ranatunga, Ray Lindwall, Sunil Gavaskar, to name a few. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Colombo. Apart from this, there are other odds and ends related to cricket. The cafe also screens cricket matches on TV for its cricket loving patrons. This place is targeted at the cricket lovers, and much of its popularity is because of its ambience, rather than the food. You will find an interesting menu, with many dishes starting with the names of famous cricketers. Both the main course and drinks menus are quite extensive. This is a high class affair, so not suitable for people travelling on a tight budget.

  • Common’s Coffeehouse
Great for breakfast, brunches and light lunches, the Common’s coffeehouse is a great place to hang out with friends. Try the Tandoori chicken cheese roti, crab rolls and Prawn linguine. And the Grilled Hawaiian Burger will send you to a very very happy place. The place is quite popular among students, so it can get a bit crowded (read quite crowded). Most of the food listed on the menu are quite affordable, but tend to edge towards the steeper end. No reservation is required here, so all you have to do is just drop in.

    Address: Common’s Coffeehouse
    39A Flower Road
    Colombo CO 800
    Sri Lanka

  • Gallery Cafe

As the name suggests, this place is both an Art Gallery and a Cafe, housing an ever changing exhibition of the works of established and emerging local artists. The ambience reflects a lot of elegant sophistication with a very artistic decor. Surprisingly, the menu has remained the same, a fact the owner takes much pride in. He explains that his loyal clientele come back again and again for the same regulars and specials on the menu. Known for its great cocktails and desserts and great food (which has a predominant International / Global feel to it), Gallery cafe promises you a unique artsy experience. You must try the Chocolate cake, which is half cake and half cheesecake. Absolutely scrumptious! The place is quite expensive, so it might be more economical to come here in groups.

    Sri Lanka

  • Coco Veranda
This is another great place to kick start your day with some good old caffeine. We won’t waste any space (or time) writing accolades and poetry on the coffee served here. Yes, the coffee is great, but that’s to be expected from a cafe anyway, right? What makes this place stand out is its bistro-type atmosphere and a broad spectrum of available drinks. We strongly recommend the Hot Chocolate with marshmallows or the Blueberry-Chocolate Frappe. Apart from that, the cafe provides great choices of breads, salads and dessert (which are to die for). Go for the Death by Chocolate or the Mango Mousse, which are...well, why don’t you find out yourself?

    Address: Coco Veranda
    32 Ward Place (near Odel)
    Sri Lanka
    Telephone: +94-11-7-635635 (open from 8am to 11:30pm)

There you have it! These are some of the best cafes we could find in this land of tea, which come highly recommended by tourists all over the world. The best thing about cafes is that you get great coffee without having to make it yourself. Plus they are the perfect places for catching up on some reading or some R&R. There are several Colombo tour packages, which include a trip to the joints serving these delectable dishes. Did we tell you that Sri Lankans are a very lovely and friendly batch, with always a smile on their faces? Well now you know! So socialising and making some new friends shouldn’t be a problem either.
