In Darjeeling, festivals and events depicts the harmonious blend of the various races belonging to Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and Tibet who inhabits the place. Most of the festivals and events in the city are celebrated simultaneously with the other Hindu Festivals like Holi, Ram Navami, Raksha Bandhan, Nag Panchami etc. Christmas and the Easter is also celebrated with same gaiety and fervor.
Besides all these, there are a number of other festivals and events which are regionally celebrated by the mixed races of the hilly tract. Let's discuss them in details:

  • Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival

    Now, we all know that Darjeeling is famous for its tea cultivation. The unique taste and fragrance of Darjeeling Tea make it a favourite among the people all over the world. Thus, the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival is celebrated to promote and cherish the tea culture of the place.

    The Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival in Darjeeling is one of the most significant annual festivals that take place during the months of December and January. It is also celebrated in the neighboring regions like the district of Kurseong, Kalimpong and state the of Sikkim in similar gaiety and fondness. Tourists from far and wide gather to celebrate the grand occasion in the tranquil serenity of the hills of Darjeeling. Water sports, food carnival, toy-train ride, nature walk, film fest, visit to sanctuaries are the mainly enjoyed in course of this time.
    The Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival is organized jointly by the
    West Bengal Tourism, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council and Sikkim Tourism and supported by the Govt. of India Tourism along with the Private Tour Operators and Hoteliers.

  • Loshar Festival

    The Loshar Festival in Darjeeling marks the new year of the Tibetans and it usually falls in the month of February. It is an important festival in the Tibetan calendar year and its celebration continues for a week. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and spirit by the youthful Tibetans. The youths take to the streets performing the traditional Yak dance dressed in multi colored clothes. They walk down the street singing and dancing the sacred folk lures that fill the air that makes the atmosphere electrifying.
    It is a significant festival in Darjeeling because of the huge population of Tibetans in the city. However, every individual in the place at that point feels the beating pulse of the city. The entire city is adorned with colored paper strings and the people are seen dressed up beautifully in traditional dresses and jewellery.

  • Darjeeling Carnival

    Darjeeling Carnival is supposedly the biggest event in the city. It was the initiative of the citizens of Darjeeling, along with the local and state government, to celebrate the harmonious diversity and culture of the city. It is a 10 days event and usually takes place by the end of the year. To land up in Darjeeling during the carnival you will need to keep your eyes and ears open for the dates. It is not very difficult though, because the news buzzes everywhere once the dates are out.
    Music is the major attraction of the events in Darjeeling. Being regarded as the breeding spot of musician and it is also true that every other person regardless of age sings and plays some instrument or the other. Nepali Rock is very popular in Darjeeling and the Darjeeling Carnival Event has been enriched with rock performances from some of the best rock bands since its day of inception. Chowrasta or the Mall sways to the music of the popular local and Kolkata stars with English, Hindi, Bengali and Nepali songs.

The city comes alive to many other festivals like the Bum-Chu festival, which is the celebration of the event of lamas at Tashiding Monastery open a pot called Phumba containing holy water. Also the Dasain Festival in Darjeeling that usually falls in the month of October, which is the Durga Puja of Darjeeling and the Tihar Festival, which follows the rituals of Laxmi puja.
