Hyderabad’s four hundred years of rich history and heritage reveals all its colour, vibrancy and energy during its festivals and events. Vacation in Hyderabad is always a one-of-a-kind experience but this is doubled up if you happen to visit during any of the festivals and events. Check out the list of festivals and events and plan your vacation according to it. Along with a taste of its hospitality, take home a taste of its extravagant culture.

  • Deccan Festival

Flickering lights reflecting from multi-hued glass bangles in the Pearls and Bangles Fair, the aroma of piping hot biryani tingling your appetite in the Food Fair, heart-rendering ghazals in the background- what more can you ask from Hyderabad. Surrender yourself to the revelry of the Deccan Festival that starts from 25 February and lasts for 5 days. Just imagine the amount of Hyderabad you can absorb! If ghazals take you to the intensity of emotions, qawalis will lighten up your spirit and provide a tang to your mood. And if this is inciting you to explore more fields of artistic uniqueness, sit back and be ready for more. Classical dances and plays also draw a huge crowd to this festival. So, go wah wah to the mushairas and when tired savour the authentic taste of Hyderabad in one of the food stalls.

  • International Kite Festival

How high can you fly? Can you touch the blue sky and smile at the cotton clouds? Haven’t you always dreamt of such moments? Well, steer your kite in the horizon and feel your dream come true. Kites have always been identified with individuals and their liberty. So, take this opportunity to express your freedom in this amazing event organised by the tourism department in January. Choose a design, a colour close to your heart and let your kite soar among the other celebrators of freedom. To freedom!

  • Lumbini Festival

Celebrating Lord Buddha and his teachings, this festival witnesses tourists from all over the world coming to pay their respect. Another important aspect of this festival that makes it look serene and spiritual is its location. Surrounded by clear, calm water on all sides, the event takes place at Nagarjunasagar Dam, adding to the beauty of the event. The modern construction of the Dam and the ancient teachings of Buddha, revisited in the festival, becomes the perfect setting for a modern day spiritual quest.

  • Ugadi Festival

There is nothing like the joy of welcoming something new and when it is in the form of a new year, it is the best. Just when you thought that you have to wait for one more year to experience this joy again, Hyderabad comes, beckoning you to visit the city somewhere in
March/ April to join in celebrating their Telegu new year, Ugadi. So, start the new day with the crimson Hyderabadi dawn and as a part of the rituals, take a spoonful of  Pacchadi, prepared with tender flowers of neem, jaggery or sugar & new tamarind. Assist the locals in decorating the entrance of their houses with mango leaves, a sign praying for luck. By the end of the day, witness exciting bullock-cart races, physical  duels, lifting of heavy weights or show off your brawns in running races and risk your luck in a game of cards. Celebrate like a local, in the midst of the locals and enjoy like a local does!

On top of all these festivals and events unique to the state, festivals like
Holi, Deepavali, Id-Ul-Fitr, Christmas are also celebrated with equal gusto and pomp. List of festivals in Hyderabad is as big as the city itself.
