Which are the popular festivals and events hosted in Kausani?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

The best way to experience some typically local flavour is perhaps during festivals. The quiet, laid back life in Kausani lights up during festivals, which are celebrated with great fervour and excitement. Here are a few popular festivals that are observed in Kausani:

  • Uttarayani Fair

    Celebrated during the month of
January, this festival is very popular in the Kumaon-Garhwal region, and is thus observed in different cities here. Copper pots, baskets, blankets, cattle and animals like ponies and mules, and herbs and spices are sold during this fair, which also has a major political significance. This fair served as a platform for freedom fighters during India’s Independence struggle and the struggle against bonded labour. Participate in the excitement of the fair and be one with the crowds, while they dance and sing local folk songs like Jhoras, Chancharis and Bairas, all night long.

  • Shivratri Fair

The most auspicious Chaturdashi is the one in the Phalgun month according to the Hindu calendar, which sees vibrant Shivratri celebrations in Kausani. Enjoy the festive air with elaborate prayers and pujas, festive food and lots of folk songs and dances. Special meals are prepared during this time, which are first offered to the deity and then distributed as bhog. This festival usually falls during the months of February and March.

  • Dussehra

This 10-day long festival during Navratras is celebrated all across India, but here in Kausani, it has a particular Kumaoni flavour to it. People keep fasts and prepare special, elaborate meals and celebrate the last day of the festival, called Dussehra, with added enthusiasm. Plan your trip during October and November (dates of the festival change every year based on the Hindu calendar) and be a part of their excitement.

Make sure to gather more information from the staff at your hotel about these festivals and the traditions associated with them, to avoid hurting local sentiments. Also ensure that all your bookings are made in advance, as during these times, the place can get quite packed. Locals, especially those who drive cabs, are usually in a complete holiday mood during these festivals, so it might be a good idea to arrange for transport in advance by speaking to the hotel management.
Lose yourself and rejoice in the celebratory air and come back with memories of a perfect holiday at Kausani.
