The steep snow capped mountains are the origin point of many rivers and they also lead to an amazing phenomena of formation of freshwater lakes in these mountain deserts. Lachen also has a couple of pristine lakes with such pure beauty that it will instantly soothe the city worn man in you.

  • Gurudongmar Lake

Known as the second highest lake in the country, the GurudongmarLake is going to sweep you off your feet. Remaining frozen in the winter months between November and March, this lake is surrounded by barren mountains and one can also spot the snow capped Kanchenjunga from here. The pristine beauty of the pure water and the stunning blue hues you can see rippling along the lake surface will be truly memorable experiences.

  • Tso Lhamo Lake

Located 5 kms from the Gurudongmar Lake, is the Tso Lhamo Lake which enjoys the tag of being India's highest lake. The source of origin of river Teesta, this lake is a short 4 kms from the Tibetan border. Accessible only if you have the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), this area is off bounds for most foreign nationals, unless they obtain a special permit. This breathtaking turquoise coloured lake is worth all the pains you go through while reaching here.

Boating is not carried out in the lakes here, so it is best to sit by the bank and have a packed picnic surrounded by mother nature at her best. It is a request that you don't litter these beauteous environs so that even our children can enjoy lovely lakeside picnics.
