A unique, delicious aroma fills the room and you see someone sniffing the air and saying,  “Smells like home”. Yes, it is quite common for people to identify their local foods with their home in particular and hometown in general. There is no doubt that Hyderabad is identified with biryani as much as it is with the Charminar. So, without knowing some locals food, there is a huge gap between you and Hyderabad.   • Biryani

    The most famous celebrity in Hyderabad, no, its not a Tollywood star, biryani is a non-vegetarian’s dream-come-true. Of three kinds, the Kacchi (raw) biryani,the Jappu (raw) biryani and the Pakki biryani, you’d wish you could take it home as souvenirs. Marinated with spices overnight and flavoured in yogurt  before cooking, the meat, mutton or chicken, is slowly cooked over charcoals, with the fragrant basmati rice. The result is the most beautiful dish ever. Did I say beautiful? Yes, right. Beautiful. With the colour of saffron, giving it a golden tinge and the meat half-buried in the midst of the long-grained rice, it is as if heaven itself has blessed the dish. Vegetarians can also go for the version with peas, cauliflowers and other vegetables instead of meat.
  • Hyderabadi Haleem

    Ramadan is for prayers, fasting and patience but once the prayers are over, it’s time for celebration and, of course, feasting. A porridge made from wheat and meat and topped with dry fruits, this nutritious dish will speed up your energy level and the anti-oxidants in the dry fruits will slow down your aging process. The vegetarian version is without meat but has the same popularity. With all the nutrients packed in one dish, who has time to think. Its action time, dig your spoon!
  • Chakna

    Again non-vegetarian. Don’t you just think Hyderabad is biased against vegetarians? But then, its speciality and uniqueness come out mostly in meat-based dishes. Consider a spicy stew, made of goat’s tripe with liver and kidneys to add to the taste- reading this will bring water to a non-vegetarian’s mouth. The tender meat with aromas of cinnamon and cardamom will simply take you to a different part of India, the Hyderabadi Muslim world of the country. Savour this in the Chaknawadi area near the Charminar. This is where the best of chakna will greet you.

Who can resist the taste of Hyderabad when so much is all around you! With each and every dish giving a unique flavour of the city, there are so much uniqueness around, right? Right. So, go on an eating spree and savour all the flavours of Hyderabad.
