It is not hidden from you that being the center of the biggest Islamic dynasty of all times, Agra has Islam at its core in more than one way. The numerous mosques that one find in the city also showcases that in a nutshell. Though mosques are large in number, there are some of them which are more popular because of one or the other striking features. Here are some of them:

  • Jama Masjid:
The credit for building this magnificent mosque goes to Shahajahan’s daughter, Jehanara Begum. She built the Jama Masjid memory of Shaikh Salim Chisti and his grandson Islam Khan. The mosque was built opposite to the Agra Fort and it overlooks the Agra Fort Railway Station. The masjid is famous for its touches of Iranian architecture, its unusual dome structure and the absence of minarets. It is one of the largest mosques in the country and is especially hustling with people on fridays hence getting the popular name of Jami Masjid or the Friday Mosque.

You should not even think of going to the Masjid improperly dressed in a pair of shorts or T shirts with an inappropriate message on it. Rest assured, the beauty of the mosque will embrace you with a warmth never experienced before.

  • Moti Masjid
A mosque that shines like a pearl in a moonlit night, hence also known as the Pearl Mosque, Moti Masjid is one of the oldest mosques in the city. Located inside the Agra Fort, this mosque is made entirely of white marble which explains its name and the phenomenon related to it. Though it is not open to public for praying but it is otherwise open for all the visitors from around the world. The mosque is said to be built by Shah Jehan for the people of the royal court. The magnificence of the place is elevated by the side arcades made of white marble. The entry fee is included in the fee charged for entering the Agra Fort.

  • Other mosques that are famous in the city are also in the Agra Fort. They are the Mina Masjid and the Nagina Masjid.
Mina Masjid was the mosque that was constructed by Shah Jehan for his personal use. This is another mosque that is made entirely out of white marble.
Nagina Masjid is the mosque that is also made out of white marble and is popular for its dome structures. It was built for the use of the royal women. There was a bazaar known as Mina Bazar down the road from where royal women could purchase things standing in the balcony of this mosque.

The entry fee for the both of these mosques is included in the entry fee for the Agra Fort. Also check out some other fascinating tourist places in Agra.
