Shrouded in a veil of enigma, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas and a strenuous journey has made Kedarnath the Shangri-La of all the Hindupilgrimages. Apart from the lucid awe-inspiring beauty of the town, there are many holy places and lakes which draw pilgrims to them year after year. Some of the most notable places that you must not miss out are:

  • Kedarnath Temple

Legend of this temple dates back to the times of the
Mahabharata. It is said that the guilt ridden Pandavas after having killed their cousins, wanted to beg forgiveness from Lord Shiva. Shiva however; furious at the fall of Dharma refused to bless them with his presence and turned himself in the form of a bull and dug himself into the ground. This is the place where the hump of the bull was found. It is also one of the twelve most important Jyotirlinga in Hindu religion. The temple in itself is an exquisite stone architecture. The garbhagriha houses the Shivalingam, the phallic representation of Shiva.

  • Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi

Located behind the Kedarnath temple isthe Samadhi sthal of Hinduism's holiest gurus. It is believed that Shri Adi Shankaracharya after having established the Char Dhams, the holiest of holy places for Hindu religion, at the young age of 32, went into a deep meditation. This place has been considered sacred henceforth.

  • Bhairav Temple

Located just next to the Samadhi Sthal is another awe-inspiring temple dedicated to one of the many incarnations of Shiva. This temple is closely linked with the Vaishnodevi legend. It is believed that Vaishnodevi Yatra is not complete unless the pilgrim visits the temple too. It is also said that when the whole town is closed in winter due to extreme weather conditions, Lord Bhairav protects the Kedarnath shrine . Do visit the Bhairav temple to seek blessings from the the most enigmatic Lord of Death.

These renowned temples are located in the heart of the town. The most important thing about planning your trip is that you must check beforehand if the temple is open for darshan. The temples and the town is only open during the months of May to October because the weather is much pleasant for pilgrims and tourists.
