Abundance is what describes Shillong best when it comes to nature's beauty and bounty.   • Golf Link

    If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf. Aptly said, Shillong enjoys the rare privilege of being the largest and natural golf course in the whole of Asia. This golf course is also referred to as Gleneagles of the East. Golf was introduced in Shillong in 1898 by a group of British civil service officers by constructing a nine hole course. Presently it has a 18 hole course which was inaugurated in 1924. Even if you are no die hard fan of golf, the beauty of the place is bound to keep you mesmerised. The course in located in a scenic valley surrounded by Pine and Rhododendron trees, which is home to many varieties of birds. As you take a stroll through these trees, the chirping of the birds will fill your heart with music. This golf link has also emerged as the most sought after picnic destinations in recent times.

  • Don Bosco Museum for Indigenous Culture

    Located within the premises of Sacred Heart Church, Mawlai, the building is shaped like a spiral and can be seen from a distance. This place is run by Salesian order of the Catholic church and has gigantic archive of information on the entire North Eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. The vast collection includes attire, accoutrements, weapons, ornamentation and rare photographs. The whole idea is to preserve the culture of the region from extinction. You can get a slice of the North Eastern history.

    Timings: Summer - 9.30am to 5.30pm (1.30 to 5.30 pm on Sundays)
    Winter - 9.30am to 4.30pm (1.30 to 4.30 pm on Sundays)
    Entry: INR 50 for Indians, INR 150 for foreign nationals, INR 30 for students.

  • Wards Lake

    Every famous place has a bit of history attached to it. Over a period of time, it gets difficult to separate reality from fiction in the stories surrounding the place, and such stories make interesting anecdotes. It is said that long time back, there was a Khasi prisoner who was so bored with the daily routine of his life that he requested his warden to allow him to work at Wards Lake. He was given the permission, and what stands there today is a marvellous and scenic lake which attracts locals and tourists alike. This century old horseshoe shaped lake is located near the governor's house in the heart of the city. You can take a boat ride with your beloved, or a leisurely walk will do good to your lungs. The beautiful varieties of fishes in the lake will keep you entertained and you can feed them as well.
