The lazy stretch of backwaters, shimmering shyly under the radiant sun is where the snakebirds sit keenly waiting to catch the fish swimming underneath. Wait on as the bird uncoils its neck, swoops into water (no splash, no sound) and returns with the prey in its mouth. And, this is one of the many sights in Kumarakom that will leave you speechless....

  • Kumarakom Backwaters and Vembanada Lake

Hire a houseboat and set out sailing on the Vembanad Lake. Sail through the lagoons and backwater lined with tall coconut trees. Look through the clear water and spot little
karimeen (pearl spot fish). You can either hire a houseboat which are more on the luxurious side with fancy bedrooms and bathrooms or get a boat which looks like a passenger boat and has a deck. There is also a boat service Kerala Water Transport.

Hiring a houseboat would cost you between INR 1500 to INR 1700 per hour. A complete sail would take about 5-6 hours and there would be additional charges for food per person. There are two services morning and evening. Morning tour is between 10 am and 5 pm the evening service is from 5 pm to next day morning. The boat is anchored in the middle of the backwaters at night as movement is not allowed. The other boats and ferries are definitely a cheaper deal. You can either get in touch with tour agents or get your own hotel to arrange for the boats. Please note that these rates reach sky high during peak season (December to March)

Watch the waters, the blue skies and discover why this land (or water) is called God's very own!

  • Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

As you sail across the glistening backwaters, perch yourself at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary for a tete-a-tete with nature. The Bird Sanctuary nestles cozily along
Lake Vembanad. Here, you'll be greeted by the local waterfowl, egret, duck, moorhen, cuckoo, owl, Brahminy Kite, Heron Darter and Cormorant and the migratory Siberian Cranes as well. There are also Teals, Larks, Parrots, Flycatchers etc. Stroll through the 14 acres in the morning or evening hours for birdwatching and say hello to some of the rarest species of birds.

  • Pathiramanal

Then there is Pathiramanal, a gorgeous island on the lake where you can boat down to. This is also a haven for
migratory birds and a hangout zone for the locals. It'll take you a 40 minutes from Alappuzha and 30 minutes from Kumarakom. Take a speedboat preferably. Spend some morning hours or late evening hours here, when the sun isn't too hot to bear. The cool breeze and the golden sand here are just a sneak peek into God's own country.

  • Bay Island Driftwood Museum

Your next destination in Kumarakom can be Bay Island Driftwood Museum. This is a colossal exhibition of driftwood articles in a unique and contemporary fashion. There are root sculptures in an array of designs and shapes for you to glance through. Story goes that long ago a school teacher picked up the habit of randomly collecting driftwood pieces brought by the sea to the shore. With each cyclone the sea brought along ancient trees and roots and left behind its loot on the shores. These pieces were gathered, cleaned and shaped to give them creative forms – birds, fish, animals. This process of developing the plundered goods brought in by the Bay of Bengal is on display at this museum for you to see.

Timings: 10 am to 1 pm, 1.30 pm to 6 pm everyday except Sunday: 12.30 am to 6 pm. (Monday holiday).

  • Kumarakom Beach

If water sports is your thing, then Kumarakom Beach is just the thing for you. You can enjoy
water skiing, wind surfing, parasailing, boating, swimming and water polo as well. Get started with a game of volleyball or just sit and sunbathe at the beach, just unwind yourself and have fun at Kumarakom beach. There are spas and ayurvedic massage centres in the resorts lined around the beach, everything you need for a relaxed vacation.

Of course cruising over the backwaters is the most fun thing to do here. Add to this a bit of bird watching and a museum visit for a complete Kumarakom vacation. Visit in June and August for bird watching and for a rendezvous with the migratory birds visit between November to February.
