If you thought that Bharatpur was only about wildlife, think again! Oh, how will you till the time I shed some light on the temples that are located in the city. The temples are unique in the context of their architecture and building style. But that’s not the end of story. There are many temples that are devoted to Lakshman which is really rare and adds charm to the place. Excited, right? Read on my friend, read on.

  • Ganga Temple

This temple is said to be one of the most beautiful temples located in the heart of city. The temple that features a beautiful idol of Goddess Ganga, this temple has an interesting legend associated to it. It is said that the Ganga temple was built by Maharaja Balwant Singh who prayed to Goddess Ganga for a child and promised to build a temple if his wish was fulfilled. Well, rest is history. The temple was built so you can guess the rest of the story. The temple also features a statue of a crocodile which is considered to be the carrier of the Goddess. When you are leaving the temple, you are offered a prasad of the holy water of the river which is bought in bulk from Haridwar every year and is stored in a silver pot which for the Goddess’ blessings. The temple is accentuated by beautiful carvings on the walls making this superb blend of artistic Rajputana, royal Mughal and our very own South Indian styles of architecture a sight well-worth watching.

  • Lakshman Temples

Few of the most prominent temples in the city, Lakshman Temples have their special place in every person’s heart in the city.  Technically, there are two Lakshman Temples in the city. One is located in the main market area that is said to be 400 years old which is believed to be built by a Naga Sage. Today, one of his descendants serves the temple and is trying to preserve whatever is left of the temple.

Another one located very near to this temple is another Lakshman Temple that was built by the founder of the city, Maharaja Baldev Singh. It is believed that the the king built this temple to pray for emerging victorious in all the battles that he was ever a part of. This temple is said to be 300 years old and is visited by dozens of locals and tourists alike.

  • Banke Bihari Temple

Inspired by the Brij architecture, this temple is known for its grandeur and popularity because of which it is crowded by a large number of devotees every day. The temple is located in the centre of the city which makes it all the more accessible for everyone. The main complex has a beautiful idol of Lord Krishna and Radha. Beautiful paintings depicting several of the stories related to Lord Krishna’s childhood add another world charm to the temple. The morning and evening aarti is another attraction in itself before which the idols of the Lord are decorated with jewels and beautiful clothes. Hundreds of devotees can be seen at this time of the day waiting outside the main verandah just for getting a glimpse of their beloved lord.

Aren’t they just adorably interesting? Every brick, every stone has a story to tell in these temples provided you have all ears for it. If not the natural beauty, these temples are going to make you visit Bharatpur again and again. Lakshman Temple
