  • Mahabaleshwar Temple
    Considered to be the Kashi of the South, Mahabaleshwar Temple is held in high reverence by devotees. The temple is said to be one of the seven sacred Muktikshetras in India and is visited by Hindus to perform the death rites for their departed ancestors and to take the blessing of Lord Shiva. The ancient temple is constructed in Dravidian architectural style.
    Situated 1 km away from the bus stand, the temple is abuzz with resonating hymns and prayers during the aarti in the evenings. The temple also holds a different aura during the celebration of Shivaratri in the month of February. The magnificent idol of Lord Shiva is mounted on a temple chariot and is driven to the temple from the main bazaar. Soaked in peace and serenity, the temple is bound to rejuvenate your soul.

  • Bhadrakali Temple
    Legend has it that Ravana performed tapasya at Mount Kailash to please Lord Shiva and also sang Shiva Tandava Stotram in his sweet voice. Lord Shiva pleased with the devotion granted Ravana anything he wished for. Ravana in return asked for the Atmalinga and a wife who will be more beautiful than Uma, the wife of Lord Shiva.
    When Ravana was on his way home, he came across Lord Vishnu disguised as a Brahmin. When asked by Lord Vishnu about the woman Ravana was carrying on his shoulders, Ravana narrated the entire episode. When he brought her down off his shoulders so that the Brahmin could look at her, Ravana was shocked. Lord Vishnu with his tricks had made Uma look tired and aged leading Ravana to abandon Uma there.
    At that moment, Lord Vishnu asked Uma to resides in Gokarna itself.
    The Bhadrakali Temple was built in honour of Uma and she is the presiding deity of this revered temple.

  • Maha Ganapati Temple
    Built in honour of Lord Ganesha, the temple is a few kms from the popular Mahabaleshwar Temple. It is believed the temple was constructed in awe of Lord Ganesha, who succeeded in taking the Atmalinga from Ravana. Legend has it that one needs to first visit the Maha Ganapati temple before the Mahabaleshwar temple.
