If you were to have a bird's eye view of Leh, you'll quickly notice that the numerous monasteries scattered carefully across the mountains. One may wonder that this spectacular arrangement is part of a divine plan to spread the message of peace. Leh isn't just about the monasteries, there are also other religious places known for their beauty, history and spiritual background. Following are some of these destinations you may want to know:

  • Prayer Wheel

Come, partake in an experience that is no less than transcendental. Here, powerful mantras, printed on paper are coiled inside the wheels. It is believed that the the sight of a mantra is as effective as reciting it. These wheels are integral to Buddhist worship and prayer. The scenic view around the place is mesmerizing. Just take a casual walk along the wheels. It's at this time when you leave behind the worries of city life behind and meditate. The experience is blissful!

  • Jama Masjid

Well, there are numerous monasteries in Leh for you to visit but there are fewer Mosques. So why not visit one? The Jama Masjid at Leh was constructed to commemorate the desire of the mighty Aurangzeb. He expressed a desire to build a Masjid in lieu of helping retract the Mongol army. Today, with a little renovation here and there, it still stands like a divine apparition right at the centre of the city.

Note that the entry to the mosque is confined to men.

  • Shanti Stupa

How about a chance to capture the mesmerising Leh from a height of 4,267 metres? Just climb up 500 steps (it isn't as scary as it sounds), get to Shanti Stupa and let your camera go crazy. Colourful prayer flags greet you on your trek and encourage you to climb. It feels like a little travel towards a heavenly abode to meet God.

It's peaceful up there but if the climb has made you hungry, there is a little cafe to take care of those hunger pangs. There is also a meditation room for the peace lovers. This place is reposeful, especially if you manage to reach during the early morning hours or right before sunset. If you've been looking for a place to sit and introspect, your search ends here.

  • Thiksey Monastery

Try reaching Thiksey Monastery in the morning hours. You could put your fancy camera to use and capture the little hide and seek game of the sun rays between snow capped mountains. It's simply fantastic! It's not just the location that is exciting. The place is full of adorable monks and their cheerful manners is the best way to kick start a day. You could also be a part of the pujas, admire the wall paintings (each narrating a story) or laze around sipping traditional tea. Above all, do visit Thiksey for inner peace!
