Food is a major highlight in Colombo, which makes it imperative to check out and experiment with the local tastes. But where? With so many restaurants vying for attention and promising tempting delights from all over the world, choosing a good restaurant can become quite challenging and confusing. However, the solution is right before your eyes. So wipe off that frown from your forehead and have a look at your top options:

  • Royal Thai

Royal Thai is one of the restaurants in the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, which has been the declared as the best 5 star hotel by both Sri Lankan Tourism Department and Tripadvisor. So you can rest assured that this is the best place to indulge in some Thai cuisine. The restaurant overlooks a paved terrace and boasts of a soothing ambience. As far as the food is concerned, the Thai master chefs will give you no cause for complaints. Try the Crab meat curry, Kangkung in garlic gravy and the Panang chicken. This is a pricey affair, but each flavourful bite is worth the money

    Address: Royal Thai

For those Thai food lovers who are travelling on a moderate budget, check out the Siam House Thai Restaurant.

  • London Grill

Located in the basement of the Cinnamon Grand, this place has an great wine collection and an intensive menu ranging from Lobster bisques (prepared and flambéed at your table), imported Australian steaks (a speciality here) and grilled Salmon or chicken. If you order a Caesar Salad or even a cup of French or Irish coffee, you are going to be entertained by the waiter who will make the preparation by your tableside and present it with quite a bit of theatrical flair. All this comes with a price, which is on the much higher side.

Get ready for a sizzling experience! This restaurant is a huge hit amongst the locals and tourists alike. You can indulge in unmatched sizzlers, steaks, seafood, Mongolian, Chinese and Indian cuisine...and the desserts - they are absolutely sinful! That’s quite a delectable mixed bag of options. Being a steakhouse, The Sizzle is every meat lover’s paradise (they serve vegetarian sizzlers and regular meals as well). Try the options in the smelting pot and the hot sizzling desserts. We promise that every bite will make you taste buds dance with glee. The prices are a little on the higher side, especially after all the taxes are added. Still, it’s value for money and the food here will leave a lasting impression on you for years to come.

  • Mango Tree

This restaurant serves great North-Indian and Tandoori dishes. They have a lot of charcoal grilled items on the menu which gives the food a very nice smoky flavour and they focus a lot on low-fat cooking. So that’s an unbeatable combination of taste and health available at very affordable prices. One of the few places which serve authentic Indian food, away from India, this restaurant is worth a try. They have a fairly good selection of wines and a nice variety of cocktails as well.

    Sri lanka

  • Chutneys

Now that we’ve listed a restaurant specialising in north-Indian cuisine, how can we ignore its southern counterpart? So we bring you Chutneys, another restaurant in the Grand Cinnamon, which comes highly recommended by tourists for its amazing ambience and of course, great food. Though you can find dishes from all over India, the food served here is more focused on the southern delicacies. The menu is quite extensive with different sections bearing the name of 4 southern Indian states, followed by a listing of the vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes specific to that region. Try their dosai thalis or the biryanis. Among drinks, their Mango lassi, buttermilk and the spicy tamarind drink are quite popular. Now for the best part - for a 5 star restaurant, the prices are extremely reasonable. So you’d better hurry, the tables get booked pretty quick here.

Tip: Avoid this restaurant if you are short on time. The service can be a bit slow here.

    Address: Cinnamon Grand
    77 Galle Road
    Sri Lanka
    Telephone: +94-11-2-497372 (open from 12pm to 2:30pm, and 7pm to 11pm)

  • Nihonbashi

How about some Japanese food? Nihonbashi means the “Japan bridge” and the owner believes that the restaurant serves as a connection between the two countries. There are three restaurants operating in Colombo, each with a lunch and dinner menu, containing an impressive catalogue of very authentic Japanese dishes, as well as other global dishes. Go for the assorted Tempura meal or the sushi rolls and Onigiri (rice balls with stuffing inside). The restaurant is quite pricey as compared to other restaurants in the area (there is an additional 26% tax), but this is where you’ll get the very best Japanese food. So come on in, or as the Japanese like to say, Irrashaimase! The address for the main restaurant is:

    Address: Nihonbashi Honten
    11 Galle Face Terrace
    Sri Lanka
    Telephone: +94-11-2-323847 (open from 12pm to 2:30pm, and 6pm to 10:30pm)

If Nihonbashi is too expensive for you, you can check out the Ministry of Crab, for some inspired Japanese seafood dishes. Please check the section on seafood restaurants in Colombo for more details.

  • Bavarian, the German Restaurant

Great food, huge portions, reasonable prices and charming atmosphere. Bavarian has it all. The whole place has a German pub type ambience with tree stubs serving as chairs. You can also opt for the open seating arrangement. You will be spoilt for choices when it comes to the meat dishes. if you are going for steaks, choose the imported beef as they are best suited for grilling. You may also dig into the Honey Glazed Roast Pork, Lamb Goulash and the Crispy fried Prawns with Avocado salad. And don’t forget to order some yummy cheesecakes. A dreamland for true carnivores, Bavarian is a pleasant change from other formal restaurant scenes. It gets crowded here pretty quickly, so make sure you have a reservation.

  • Echo

Our list wouldn’t have been complete without some Italian, would it? So if you are in a mood for some antipasti, pasta or some pizza, here’s where you should come. You won’t find a more authentic Italian fare anywhere else in the country. Every Wednesday night, Echo rolls out an Italian buffet dinner, which is worth starving for the whole day. The ambience has a good splash of Italian reflected in the art deco and music. The passion and honesty in every preparation and its subsequent presentation is quite apparent. Apart from the Italian spread, the desserts and the speciality Italian coffee are a phenomenal hit here. Order something from their Risotto selections or try the Seafood linguine (Chickpea/ vegetable linguine for vegetarians), followed by a dish of homemade ice cream, which are creamy melt-in-the-mouth bites of sweet heaven!
