The City of temples as its known, Puri has many temples which are not only famous for their religious importance but also for their flamboyant architecture. It is not possible to visit each and every temple in the city but a few one must see are:

In Puri

  • Shri Jagannath Temple

    Located on the coast of Bay of Bengal, it is greatly revered by the followers of the Vaishnava traditions. Revered as one the most sacred temple of the Hindu religion, Jagannath literally means "lord of the universe". Constructed during the reign of famous king of Ganga Dynasty Ananta Varman Chodaganga Deva in 12th century, it is a part of the Char Dham pilgrimages that a Hindu is expected to make in one's lifetime. The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra, or chariot festival, in which the three main temple deities, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, are hauled on huge and beautifully decorated chariots. Do keep in mind that the temple has selective entry, Hindus of non-Indian origin are not allowed in the temple

  • Markandeshwar Temple

    Established in the 12th century, the temple's architecture and detailed carvings make it worth a visit. Situated to the north of the Jagannath temple, the ancient Markandeshwar Shiva Temple is situated in the Markandeshwar street by the side of the Markandeshwar tank. It is the place where sage Markandeya meditated to Lord Shiva. This temple is considered as one of the Panch Tirthas of Puri and also one of the fifty two sacred Shiva places of the country.

  • Shri Loknath Temple

    This well known Lord Shiva temple was constructed in the 11th century. Mythologically, it is believed that the Shivling of the temple was founded by Lord Ram. The specialty of this shivling is that it is always under the water. According to belief, Goddess Ganga flows as a stream of water through the head of the shivling. Ranked next to Shri Jagannath temple, it is situated around three kilometres from it on the western outskirts of the town. The main festival of the temple is ‘Saranti-Somobar-mela' in which thousand of devotees flock to the temple to be a part of this auspicious event.

  • Ganesha Temple

    Situated just behind the main temple in the Jagannath temple complex, it is a must see for all Hindus as it is one of the archaeologically important temples of puri. The temple is imperative to the Vaishnava traditions and saint Ramananda who was closely connected with the temple. Even though the temple is small, it does not stop devotees to offer their prayers daily in the temple.

Around Puri

  • Sun Temple

    The temple is dedicated to the sun god "Surya". A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was constructed in the 13th century from oxidized and weathered ferruginous sandstone by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. It is one of the seven wonders of India and is famous for its intricate stone carvings. The entire complex is in the form of huge chariot of the Sun God, drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels at its base. The complex also contains erotic sculptures similar to Khajuraho temple. The work is exquisite and the details are uncanny. Located at a distance of 35 kilometres from puri, it's a must visit place for anyone who enjoys archeological wonders.

  • Alarnatha Temple

    The temple is famous religious place among Krishna devotees. Situated on a hilltop called Brahmagiri, around 25 km from Puri, it remains open from 6am to 9.30 pm. According to mythology Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Vishnu here and thus the place was named ‘Brahmagiri' which means Brahma's hill. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Lord Alarnath with four arms holding shankha, chakra, gada, and padma in each arm. The festival of Chandan Yatra is celebrated for 21 days every year at the lake behind the temple.
