Too fried due to work? Want to take a break from the city and enjoy in the lap of nature? If yes, then you would be amazed at how the beautiful city of Gangtok takes you handholding to the several beautiful places of interest. Being one of a kind hill station, it offers breathtaking view of the himalayas. Want to know more, then read on.

  • Do-Drul Chorten Stupa

Constructed in 1945 under the leadership of Trullshi Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, Do-Drul Chorten Stupa is the biggest and most important Stupa in Sikkim. Inside this stupa, there is a complete set of Dorjee Phurba, Kangyur relics (Holy Books) and other religious objects. Around the stupa, there are 108 Mani Lhakor or prayer wheels. The devotees turn these prayer wheels to read and chant the Mantras engraved on them. Don't forget to buy souvenirs from the memoir shop on the way up.

  • Tsomgo Lake

This beautiful lake harmonizes with the scenic beauty around which is doubled by its reflection in the lake. Situated at an altitude of 12,310 feet, it is one of the most popular destination for tourists. It is located at 35 km from Gangtok, has an average depth of 50 ft and remains frozen during the winter months up to mid-May. The lake worshipped as a holy lake by Sikkimese has a moderate-sized temple of Lord Shiva on the lakeshore. Many beautiful flowering plants like primula and other plantations like alpine add beauty to the lake. You can experience Yak ride for around 650 per person. It is in the restricted area and therefore an inner line permit is required, from Police through the tourism department or the travel agent, for Indians to visit this place. Foreign nationals are not permitted to visit this lake without special permission.

  • Nathula Pass

It connects the Indian state of Sikkim with China's Tibet Autonomous Region and forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road. It is around 56 kilometres from Gangtok city. The pass was closed after the Indochina war in 1962, but was reopened in 2006 following numerous bilateral trade agreements. The pass, at 4,310 m (14,140 ft) above mean sea level has very low temperature, so make sure you carry heavy woolens. It is better to make the trip early in the day as the weather worsens in the evening. Even though the road to the pass is a roller coaster ride but its beauty is sure to mesmerize you. Although there is no fee but you need to get a permit in advance. You can find survival food like momos/maggie and boiled eggs. The oxygen level is low so this place is not recommended for people with breathing problems. Nathula pass remains open only to Indian nationals on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Kangchenjunga

If you love trekking, you'll love hiking through these snow capped mountains of the Kanchenjunga range. A mighty upheaval of ice and snow,Kanchenjunga is the world's third highest peak. "Kanchenjunga" is a Tibetan word, which means "five treasuries of the great snow". The highest summit of Kangchenjunga is 28,156 feet. Kanchenjunga is rich in both natural as well as cultural diversity, especially the rich diversity of endangered wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer and red panda. Best time to plan your trekking trip is in April/May before the monsoon sets in when the weather is pleasant and the orchids and rhododendrons are in full bloom. Goeche La trek in Sikkim is the standard base camp for trekking.

These places will surely add charm to your visit to Gangtok. Adventure, religious visit or general sightseeing, this place has something for everyone.
