The people of Alwar pride themselves in their local cuisine and they have every reason to. Lack of availability of fresh produce and water, didn’t deter them from coming up with amazing, delicious recipes and dishes, ones that will have you smacking your lips and polishing off your plates. Some of the popular vegetarian restaurants in Alwar are:

  • Prem Pavitra Bhojanalya

A humble eating joint, it’s word of mouth fame has been immense in the past few years, especially since tourism has spread its tracks and wheels to Alwar. A little fiery in flavour, the
yellow dal (lentils), dal fry, dahi bhalla (deep fried bread pieces wrapped in urad dal, soaked in yogurt and topped off with spices and mint for flavour), malai kofta are some of the dishes to definitely order off the menu. The dishes are likely to be served with stuffed green chillies, but if they are not, ask for them provided you can handle more spiciness. Put off that fire in your mouth with kheer (creamy rice pudding) or phirni. Having opened a new branch recently, the eating joint has a separate Air-conditioned section for which you have to pay additional INR 10 per person.

A meal for two will cost about INR 150 to 200.

With a shadowed ambience and simple settings, the restaurant may seem unlikely to make it to any list of fine dining. But ignore the superficial appearance and you will be rewarded with delicious dishes for your faith. Here you can find a range of staple
vegetarian dishes and some very creative paneer (cottage cheese) based dishes. Ask for the seasonal vegetable dishes as they more likely to be fresh and flavourful alongwith one paneer dish, with missi roti and chutney on the side. With its functional setting, you are more likely to find either business deals being struck on the neighbouring tables or couples gazing into each other’s eyes, who keeping missing their mouth every time the spoon comes near.

A meal for two will cost you about INR 300.

  • Thali House

A little bit off tangent, here you can find dishes with a southern slant.
Thali house serves traditional South Indian cuisine. Don’t let the gloomy, dim ambience put you off of the amazing masala dosas and spicy, aromatic sambhar they make. You can also go in for their thalis that carry a lit bit of this and that and an assortment of dals and vegetables-a filling and delicious meal.

A meal for two would cost you INR 150 to 200.

Though there is generally a teenage mob fest going on, especially in the evenings and weekends, this small cafe is ideal for that espresso shot after a tiring morning of walking through the fort complexes or late in the evening as you gush over the photos you have clicked so far. If you find yourself too out of breath and heated for a coffee, then sip your way to coolness with a glass of their delicious lassi.

Kalakand or Mawa (Milk cake) for which Alwar is popular all across the country, you might want to head to Baba Thakur Dass and Sons sweet shop in Kalakand market. It is the best and ideal place to sink your teeth into this divine sweetmeat.

Vegetarians never had it so good. Cereals, pulses and lentils either in a super hot blend of spices or a more delicate blend of herbs and chillies-there is something for every taste and palate.
